************************************ Happy Birthday, Marines My mom informs me that today is the 227th birthday of the United States Marines. I think the operative word is "Hooah!" - which in civilian language means "Thanks!" *********************************** Telephone, Television & Tell-a-Friend If you know someone who might like to join the growing army of libertarians and conservatives (and a few Palm Beach Democrats) who receive our FREE Chuck Muth's News & Views briefings, just go to http://www.chuckmuth.com. ************************************ Two More Big Winners The winners and losers from Tuesday continue to come forth. We won't bother to try listing them all, but let's take a moment to congratulate two more big winners. Linda Lingle, the first Republican-elected governor in 40 long years of the state where my wife and I got married - Hawaii. This mai-tai's for you, Linda. Aloha. And Ralph Reed. The former Christian Coalition director who was elected state chairman of the Georgia GOP over the hand-picked candidate of the country-club wing of the party two years ago. Fortunately for Georgians. Yes, the candidates there were strong even though underdogs. Yes, there was a political climate favorable to Republicans this year. But Reed is a serious and talented political mechanic who deserves a lot of credit for organizing and engineering last Tuesday's historic and spectacular wins in the Peachtree State. Congratulations, Ralph. I don't know what you drink (or even IF you drink), so I'll just have another mai-tai for you. Hic! *********************************** Now, Back to the Spoilers "Chuck, in my county, we had a race where a great incumbent Republican lost by 69 votes, while a Libertarian got 338. Another open seat went to a Dem by just 27 votes, with a Libertarian getting over 400. Go figure." - News & Views reader Charles Eberle ********************************** In Your Heart You Know He's (Still) Right Join the "next generation of Goldwater Conservatives" by joining the Goldwater Club. A number always write me when I criticize their political naivet (I'm being charitable here; others would call it outright stupidity), even as I generally support their political philosophy. The fact is, they have a point about many Republicans not being true champions of limited government. But while they excel at diagnosing the disease, they are remarkably deficient in providing a cure. Take their 2000 candidate for president, Harry Browne. In a column last week, Harry laments that, "The winning (congressional) incumbents (either Democrat or Republican) have never bothered to introduce a single bill to reduce government in any significant way, while they have been reliable supporters of all sorts of new big-government schemes." Now...earth to Harry. Let's say that statement is true (and you'll be hard-pressed to get an argument over it from me). But the following statement is ALSO true: "Not a single Libertarian Party member of Congress has ever bothered to introduce a single bill to reduce government in any significant way." Why not? Well, because not a single Libertarian Party candidate has ever been ELECTED to Congress. It's real easy to just sit in the stands and criticize the real players. They don't call it the peanut gallery for nothing. It's easy to take strong, no-compromise positions when you know you'll never get elected and actually have to govern. If you want to change public policy, you have to change public officials. It that regard, the Libertarian Party has been nothing short of a dismal failure. Unless, of course, you consider it a success to be a "spoiler" candidate who throws close elections of a marginal Republican to a FAR worse Democrat. Until the LP takes seriously its responsibility to actually get candidates elected instead of just heckling from the sidelines, I can't take them seriously as a credible political organization, no matter how sympathetic I may be to their ideology. Being nothing more than a perennial spoiler is not something to be proud of. Serious libertarian-minded people grounded in reality who truly want to change public policy need to come home to the GOP...period. The key isn't just to get more Republicans elected, but better ones. Libertarians can help us do that by abandoning the hopeless cause of their third-party "movement" and join us in electing more limited-government GOP nominees in our party's primaries. It's time for rational libertarians to abandon the rookies and amateurs in the LP and come play in the big leagues with the big boys. I'll leave the light on for you. P.S. I know the transition back to the GOP herd will be tough for a lot of my Libertarian Party friends who have spent decades in the political wilderness. Rejoining the Republicans may be too big a step to take immediately. So let me propose an interim option to help ease the pain. Instead of giving your time and money to the self-defeating Libertarian Party, instead direct it to the libertarian Cato Institute think-tank. Cato is wonderfully successful in Washington, D.C. in advancing and communicating the libertarian philosophy in and around our nation's capital. You'll be advancing your cause without undercutting it politically - and without completely joining the arguably-squishy GOP. Just a thought. For more information on Cato, go to: http://cato.org/ *********************************** A Few Words from a Rational Libertarian "Your last segment about John Thune losing because of the Libertarians resonated with me. Many years ago I was the chairman of my state's Libertarian Party. I was confident that we were the vanguard of change and that the party would steadily grow and become a major force in American politics. Now I have come to recognize the Libertarian Party in the terms you used. They have become a spoiler in close elections that always end up costing the Republicans. I now see the Libertarian Party as serving little legitimate purpose. "...The left and their political representatives in the Democratic Party have become so hostile to the vision of the constitutional framers that we who love liberty must be on guard against anything that lends them support. Unwittingly the Libertarian Party often does just that, and the South Dakota race illustrates that in a devastating way. "...Another thing that makes me wary of supporting the Libertarian Party is that it scares me having these people speak for my ideals. Two years ago I watched about half an hour of the Libertarian National Convention as broadcast on C-SPAN. I was embarrassed. Here were these people presumably speaking for my point of view who looked like the sorriest losers and ne'er-do-wells I had ever seen at a televised meeting. Why should we want them to represent us? Why should the party that apparently nominated the moral lout Howard Stern to run (for President? Governor of New York?) have credibility with any of us? "...The initial part of the Hippocratic Oath is, 'First, do no harm.' In our context, I agree with you that voting Libertarian when that may elect a Democrat is doing harm first and amounts to cutting off your nose to spite your face." - News & Views reader who requested anonymity ********************************* Long Savings on Long Distance! This chain letter was started in hopes of bringing relief to other tired and discouraged men. Unlike most chain letters, this one doesn't cost anything! Just send a copy of this letter to five of your friends who are equally tired and discontent. Then bundle up your wife and/or girlfriend and send her to the man whose name appears at the top of the following list, and add your name to the bottom of the list. When your turn comes, you will receive 15,625 women. One of them is bound to be better than the one you already have. At the writing of this letter, a friend of mine had already received 184 women, of whom four were worth keeping. REMEMBER this chain brings luck. One man's pit bull died, and the next day he received a Playboy playmate. An unmarried Jewish man living with his widowed mother was able to choose between a Hooter's waitress and a Hollywood super model. You can be lucky too, but DO NOT BREAK THE CHAIN! One man broke the chain and got his wife back again. Let's keep it going, men! Just add your name to the list below!
