Keeping Their Priorities Straight

"The Senate has used one of the first votes of its lame-duck session to
accept a pay raise for the fourth consecutive year. With the 3.1 percent
pay raise, senators and representatives will make $154,700 next year instead
of the $150,000 earned this year. Lawmakers' salaries have gone up $18,000
since the end of 1999."

We're SHOCKED!

"The first full day on the job for the first woman ever to lead her
political party in the U.S. House of Representatives began under a cloud
Friday over allegations of campaign fundraising violations by California
Democrat Nancy Pelosi."

Credibility a Problem for Losertarians

"I was seriously considering joining the Libertarian Party, (but they) lost
all credibility with me when they ran Howard Stern for office. Any party
who would do that can't be taken seriously!"

- News & Views reader Earl Albright of Barstow, Ca.

Political Malpractice

"Chuck, there isn't a nickel's worth of difference between Democrats and
Republicans," writes News & Views reader Duane Arquette. But that tired,
worn-out phrase is nothing more than a cop-out for shallow thinking. It's a
soundbite. It's a clich. It's a feel-good one liner.

It's also crap.

Anyone who believes there isn't a "nickel's worth of difference" between the
GOP's new Majority Leader Tom Delay (ACU Lifetime Rating of 96) and the
Democrats' new Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (ACU Lifetime Rating of 2) is
either in clinical denial, perpetrating an intentional misrepresentation for
personal gain or is dipping into the medical marijuana.

Get help. Get real. Get bent.

Unfair & Unbalanced

Alexander Bolton reported in the Hill this week that the Democrats are
falling all over themselves trying to figure out what went wrong and what to
do to reverse the drubbing they took in this year's elections. "Party
allies even entertained the possibility of a liberal television network to
offset Fox News, which they view as an adjunct of the Republican Party."

Um, isn't that the job of ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and MSNBC?

Inventing Palestinians

"The Palestinians want their own country. There's just one thing about that:
There are no Palestinians. It's a made up word. . . . Before the Israelis
won the land in war, Gaza was owned by Egypt, and there were no
'Palestinians' then, and the West Bank was owned by Jordan, and there were
no 'Palestinians' then. As soon as the Jews took over and started growing
oranges as big as basketballs, what do you know, say hello to the
'Palestinians,' weeping for their deep bond with their lost 'land' and
'nation.'"

Piece of Cake

"Mr. Bush, God bless him, is walking a tightrope. I understand that with
vital operations coming up against Iraq and others, it's in our interest, as
Americans, to try to stabilize our Arab allies as much as possible, and,
after all, that can't be much harder than stabilizing a roomful of
supermodels who've just had their drugs taken away."

- Comedian Dennis Miller

Let's Pretend

"After weeks of negotiation, hesitation and general vacillation, our
'friends' on the (United Nations) Security Council - France and Russia -
have agreed to pretend to crack down on Saddam Hussein. In return, he can
pretend to obey."

Gays Defending America...Not

"Since August, as intercepted 'chatter' from suspected terrorists has grown
louder, the Army has dismissed seven Arabic-language specialists from
Monterey, California's Defense Language Institute (DLI). Their offense? They
happen to be gay.

"As the New Republic's Nathaniel Frank first reported, these highly-trained
Arab speakers were sacked as America braces for possible war with Iraq and
against potential terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. Personnel who speak
Arabic are desperately needed for battlefield and espionage duties. As the
House Intelligence Committee complained last fall, 'Written materials can
sit for months, and sometimes years, before a linguist with proper security
clearances and skills can begin translation.' Questioning captured
terrorists and enemy soldiers is crucial, too.

"...Whatever one thinks of homosexuality, Americans should agree - -
especially now - - that the Pentagon ought to stay focused on first things,
such as preventing America's wily enemies from converting more skyscrapers
into high-rise crematoria."

- Columnist Deroy Murdock

Enviro-wackos vs. the Navy

"The latest cause of the greens is attempting to deep-six a new Navy sonar
system that, yes, might protect the nation's ships and shores, but at an
unacceptably high price of potentially startling whales. A federal judge in
San Francisco has issued an injunction stopping the Navy from deploying its
new high-volume, low-frequency active sonar around the world because the
system would impermissibly 'harass' marine mammals."

- Columnist Rich Lowry [Editor's Note: What are the odds of such a
ridiculous ruling coming out of Nancy Pelosi's home town?]

Gun Hysteria

"A senior at Lincoln-Way High School in New Lenox, Neb., has been suspended
for five days for carrying a pellet gun--a prop he was using in a school
play. Ott now has a charge of 'possession of a look-alike weapon' on his
school record. Says his father, Mark Ott Sr., 'For some crazy reason, the
school refuses to put in his record that he was walking through the hall
with a school prop.' The Otts worry that the charge will hamper Mark Jr.'s
ambition to become an FBI agent."

Disorder in the Court

"A jury awarded the widow of teacher Barry Grunow $1.2 million from a gun
distributor Thursday. Pam Grunow's lawsuit accused Valor Corp of
distributing a gun that was 'unsafe, defective and lacked features that
would have prevented a minor from using it.'

"The case stems from the murder of teacher Barry Grunow by one of his
students. Nathaniel Brazill, 16, shot Grunow to death two years ago in a
West Palm Beach classroom. Grunow's lawyer asked for $76 million. But the
jury found gun distributor Valor Corporation 5 percent liable for Grunow's
death. . . .

"The jury didn't find any liability for Brazill, who pulled the trigger.
Brazill stole the unloaded gun and bullets from a cookie tin stashed away in
a dresser drawer of family friend Elmore McCray.

"...This is the first lawsuit in the country in which a gun company has in
any way been held responsible in a murder."

Rise and Fall of the Kennedy Dynasty

"Hidden among the many messages delivered last Tuesday was this one: The
Kennedy captivity of the Democratic Party appears to be over. . . . (T)here
are only two Kennedys left on the public payroll. There is 70-year-old
Edward M., whose girth and ideology accord him the status of extinct
volcano; and his 35-year-old son Patrick, congressman from Rhode Island,
whose apparent instability and low-wattage brain have made him the
laughingstock of Capitol Hill. . . . Indeed the only Kennedy with any future
in politics seems to be the movie muscleman Arnold Schwarzenegger, married
to Maria Shriver (daughter of Eunice). And he's a Republican."
