What Jesus Drove

"Chuck, a letter to the editor of The Arizona Republic
the other day clarified one thing: God drove a Plymouth.A gentleman wrote in
that is was documented in Genesis. 'God, in his fury, drove Adam and Eve
from the Garden of Eden.'"

The More the Merrier

"Dear Chuck: I am on a lot of lists for updates, but I have to admit that
yours is by far the most interesting, the most informative, and the most
biting of any I receive. Keep up the great work. You make my day!"

Torture

Tom Adkins is one of my favorite conservatives. The former
singer-in-a-rock-and-roll-band is a master of the soundbite with a
razor-sharp wit who has the rare ability (for conservatives anyway) to talk
and write about issues and ideology in a manner easily understood by the
average citizen sitting across the table eating meatloaf and mashed
potatoes. The name of his web site - www.CommonConservative.com - is no
accident.

Anyway, Tom is a "rising star" who is gaining greater and greater attention
by the media folks. He was on CNN's "Talk Back Live" last week discussing
the war on terrorism when he was heckled by an audience member who demanded
to know if Tom knew what it was like to be tortured.

To which my friend plainly responded: "Sir, I've been married twenty
 years."

Natural Migration

"Look, I'm glad Boston got the (2004 Democrat national) convention. It's a
feather in any city's cap to be the site of a presidential nomination.
Atlanta, Houston, and San Diego have had the privilege; no reason Boston sho
uldn't have a turn. Besides, what could be more fitting? Democrats
flocking to Boston are at least as natural as swallows flocking to
Capistrano. Or better yet, buzzards flocking to Hinckley, Ohio."

- Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby

Pot Calling Kettle Black

"Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson said yesterday...(he) wishes President
Bush had never said that 'Islam is a religion of peace,'" reported the
Washington Times on Tuesday. "He is not elected as chief theologian,' Mr.
Robertson said.

Doesn't that take an enormous amount of chutzpah from a self-proclaimed
religious theologian who ran unsuccessfully for president in 1988 and who
founded of a political action organization, the Christian Coalition?

Tell ya what, Pat. I'll encourage our President to stop talking about
religion if you'll just stop talking about politics. Deal?

The Battle on the Bayou

"The two (Louisiana U.S. Senate) candidates (Democrat incumbent Mary
Landrieu and Republican challenger Suzanne Terrell) debated over the
weekend, and the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that it was 'nasty'
from the opening comments. After the debate, witnesses told the
Times-Picayune that 'Landrieu looked over her shoulder and told Terrell,
'This is your last campaign.' ' The Terrell campaign sent out a release
saying that the 'trash talking' was 'bizarre.'"

- Washington Times, 11/26/02

There's Something About Mary('s Friends)

"These are certainly difficult political times for Louisiana freshman
Democratic junior Sen. Mary Landrieu, as she seeks to fend off a serious
challenge from her Republican opponent, State Elections Commissioner Suzanne
Terrell, in the Dec. 7 runoff. . . . She's hoping that lavish support from
interest groups - like trial lawyers in particular - will help put her over
the top.

"...On the campaign trail, Mrs. Terrell has also been sharply critical of
Mrs. Landrieu's close relationship with trial lawyers. During the current
election cycle, Mrs. Landrieu has received more than $520,000 in
contributions from lawyers and law firms, according to the web site
opensecrets.org.

"Why is Mrs. Landrieu so popular with lawyers? Part of it has to do with her
voting record. For example, while the House voted overwhelmingly for medical
liability reform in September, Mrs. Landrieu voted with Mr. Daschle and
Senate Democrats to kill similar legislation in the Senate.

"Mrs. Terrell has also been circulating a Wall Street Journal report that,
in September, Mrs. Landrieu had agreed to participate in a television
advertisement campaign by a group called Citizens for Asbestos Reform. But,
just before the ads were about to air, the Louisiana Trial Lawyers
Association's newsletter suggested that they were a plot by business to
deprive people of the right to sue. Mrs. Landrieu subsequently pulled out.

"From the trial lawyers' perspective, Mrs. Landrieu's re-election would seem
to be a very worthwhile investment indeed."

- Washington Times editorial, 11/25/02

Let's Hear It for the Tenth

"The Tenth Amendment reads: 'The powers not
delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to
the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.' If
the popular press were as interested in the Tenth Amendment as they have
been in protecting the First and obliterating the Second, the concept of
Federal expansion - led by FDR in the 30's and 40's and, 20 years later, by
LBJ - might never have been adopted, and certainly would never have survived
this long. . . . Basic human rights and Constitutional protections are not
on the table, but everything from speed limits to land use should be
returned to the States."

- Rich Galen, Mullings, 11/25/02

"God Hates Fags" Show Comes to Lexington

"Singing 'God hates America, land of the gays,' 10 members of a Kansas
anti-homosexual group picketed outside six Lexington (Kentucky) churches
yesterday morning. . . . No Lexington citizens joined the anti-gay picket,
which was organized by controversial Topeka minister Fred Phelps
(www.godhatesfags.com).

"...As it has done countless times before, the group insulted millions,
waving signs ridiculing gays, Catholics, Methodists, Lutherans, pastors,
priests, the Virgin Mary, the United States of America and the Southern
Baptist Convention. . . . Most churchgoers also ignored the inflammatory
signs, including one depicting the World Trade Center ablaze, one reading
'Thank God for Sep. 11,' and another that appeared to show stick figures
having anal sex."

- Lexington Herald-Leader, 11/25/02

Ban Fake Guns & Only Criminals Will Have Fake Guns

"From the strange but true department, the Carrollton City, Texas, Council
voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve banning the display of replica
firearms in public places. Currently City Ordinance 130.11 prohibits the
firing of a firearm within the corporate city limits of Carrollton, and the
new ordinance defines 'firearm' broadly to include BB guns, air rifles, bow
or other devices capable of propelling bullets, shot, arrows or other solid
or compact substance, whether propelled by powder, fire or other force or by
combination of such forces."

- Peter Roff, UPI's Capital Comment, 11/22/02

Zero Tolerance for...Criminals

"Chuck: While I appreciate your fine newsletter, it sometimes depresses me
when I read stories of 'zero tolerance' against children who made an honest
mistake, like Jonathan Cross (who was suspended from school for being caught
with a single shotgun shell in his pocket on Camouflage Day). Being an avid
hunter myself, I do not see the danger of a lone shotgun shell. I wish we
as a society would have 'zero tolerance' for the repeat offenders in our
criminal justice system, and stop criminalizing our children."

- News & Views reader Travis Grubbs
