Last Appeal...

I want to thank everyone who kicked in a few holiday season shillings to
help me offset some of the expense of publishing News & Views. Heck, we
probably won't need another PBS-style pledge drive like this until after the
snows melt (in Florida!). If you haven't yet added a "voluntary
subscription" to News & Views to your holiday gift-giving basket, please
take a minute to visit http://chuckmuth.com/voluntarysubscription.htm. And
thank you for your support!

Donkeys Cheat Executioner in Bayou State

"After a lackluster midterm showing last month, Democrats found something to
cheer about in Louisiana, where incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu was reelected
to the Senate Saturday in a runoff election against Republican Suzanne
Terrell, winning by a 51-49 margin. . . . Appearing before supporters who
chanted 'six more years,' Landrieu quoted scripture and declared, 'The
Democratic Party is alive and well and united.' "

The Whole Nine Yards

"What President Reagan did not have was a Congress controlled by his
conservatives when he lowered taxes. There was still no fiscal constraint.
This time the conservatives have both possibilities, control of fiscal
constraints and reduction of taxes. Now let's demonstrate the will of our
convictions and make it happen...this is the time. Seize the moment. Where
is Barry Goldwater when we need him?"

- M. Gene Aldridge, New Mexico Independence Research Institute

Dumping on Doc Kissinger

"...Mr. Kissinger had to know that his appointment as chairman of the
president's September 11 commission would provide an excuse for every
Nixon-hater to dip his pen in poison. They haven't disappointed. The
dependably vindictive Maureen Dowd compared him to 'Dr. Strangelove,' while
CNN's Mark Shields likened Mr. Kissinger's appointment to putting Dracula in
charge of the local blood bank.

"Those rather monstrous suggestions are easily countered by the common sense
suggestion that, in taking on this national service at this point in his
79-year life, Mr. Kissinger has little to gain and a great deal to lose. He
certainly doesn't need the money, there's little luster to add to a career
that includes a Nobel Peace Prize (1973) and simultaneous service as
national security adviser and secretary of state to two presidents (he's the
only person to ever have done this)."

Radical AIDS Vaccine Discovered in Africa

"World AIDS Day (Dec. 1) came and went with barely any notice of the fact
that a kind of vaccine against HIV has been researched, tested and is
available to save countless lives in Africa. It was first developed during
the late 1980s in Uganda, where it has created the biggest drop in HIV
prevalence in the world. It hasn't been patented or advertised, but it has a
name: abstinence and marital fidelity."

Media's Double Standard

"When vicious, sadistic murders are committed by whites against blacks, or
straights against gays, that news is trumpeted throughout the media. But
when similar atrocities are committed by blacks against whites, or gays
against straights (including children), there is again utter silence in most
of the media.

"Instead of learning that some terrible and vile things have been done by
human beings of every race, color, creed, national origin, and sexual
orientation - in countries around the world - the message of the media is
that some groups are victimized by American society. That is media bias,
made more insidious by the fact it is not expressed openly as editorial
opinion, but by corrupting the reporting of news."

- Columnist Thomas Sowell

Reefer Madness an Abysmal Failure

"Make no mistake: The 'noble experiment' of marijuana prohibition that was
enacted in 1937 has been an abysmal failure. The goal of marijuana
prohibition was to prevent people from using marijuana. Yet, according to
government figures, only a tiny percentage of Americans had tried marijuana
in 1937, but as of last month, a Time magazine poll indicated that 47
percent of adults - an astounding 98 million people - have used marijuana."

- Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project

We the People & the NRA

"There's a problem in the land, or so said the so-called reformers. Powerful
organizations, they told us, are taking over our politics. They are drowning
out the voice of the people. Democracy is in peril unless we can
reconstitute our campaign finance laws to shut these organizations up when
elections draw nigh. Need an example? They had one they loved to trot out -
the National Rifle Association.

"There are many problems with the analysis. One is that the First
Amendment's free speech guarantee applies to everyone, even the powerful.
Another is that the threat to democracy - at least according to any
traditional understanding of democracy - is not people speaking out, but
governmental attempts to control these people. And still another problem
with the reformers' view is that many of the groups in question - including
the NRA, their favorite whipping boy - are nothing more than collections of
citizens exercising citizenship. They ARE the people.

"It may serve the purposes of those who don't like the NRA to portray it
otherwise. Some references make it seem a dark, menacing force of secretive
conspirators. The truth is that it is a group that operates in the open and
has 4 million members, some of whom are almost surely your neighbors and
friends."

- Columnist Jay Ambrose

Constitutional Conservatives

".'Conservative' traditionally has meant a government based on the original
intent of our founding fathers. Few would disagree with the statement that
our government today has little resemblance to the one envisioned by our
founders. . . . For those with a genuine concern for the future of our
country, we might want to consider adapting the term 'constitutional
conservative' as the one to describe the principles which we feel are best
for our country and which are based on the original intent of the
constitution."
