Doggone Friday the 13ths
Due to some uncontrollable problems with my Earthlink internet service on
Thursday, I'm a day late getting this edition of News & Views out to you
all. Sorry for the inconvenience.
************************************
Has His Priorities Straight
"What makes a good Republican? An elected Republican."
- Incoming Maryland GOP state chairman John Kane

Hair Apparent
"John Kerry's hairdresser continues to make waves in Washington. The news
that the Massachusetts senator, Democratic presidential candidate, Vietnam
veteran, Big Ketchup spouse, Vietnam veteran and Vietnam veteran gets a $75
coiffure from Cristophe's has riveted the Beltway and distracted from his
message. ('As a Vietnam veteran, I know what it's like to wake up in a
jungle full of terrifying bangs.' 'So was it tough finding a good salon over
there?')
"To be honest, it's not entirely obvious where the 75 bucks goes. I mean, I
haven't seen the back of his head in awhile, so it's possible he has an
attractively angled nape. Otherwise, the most likely explanation is that it'
s 15 bucks for the stuff on top but he pays $30 per eyebrow for some Ann
Miller industrial-strength lacquer that freezes them into that permanently
furrowed look."
- Columnist Mark Steyn, Wall Street Journal

Chipping Away at Liberty
"In the post-September 11 environment, no rational person believes civil
liberties are inviolable. After all, government's primary obligation is to
secure the lives of American citizens.
"But when government begins to chip away at our liberties, we must insist
that it jump through a couple of hoops. First, government must offer
compelling evidence that its new and intrusive programs will make us safer.
Second, government must convince us there is no less invasive means of
attaining the same ends. In too many instances, those dual burdens have not
been met."
- Robert A. Levy of the Cato Institute

Disorder in the Court
"When Caesar Barber suffered his second heart attack in 1999, his
cardiologist rightly told him to lay off the junk food. At the time, Mr.
Barber, in his mid-50s and 285 pounds, self-admittedly trundled into
fast-food restaurants 'five to six times a week, two to three meals a day.'
To most people, that would seem to be an obvious if not chief factor in his
terrible health. But Mr. Barber isn't most people. He ignored the good
doctor's advice, and took a trial lawyer's instead. Earlier this year, Mr.
Barber filed suit in New York's Supreme Court against a host of fast-food
companies, blaming them for his deteriorating health.
"...The fast-food industry sells food, period. It is up to the individual -
and not the government - whether hamburgers are a smart meal choice every
day."
- Washington Times editorial, 12/12/02

Another Illegal Alien Problem
"Mexican ambulance drivers are transporting hospital patients unable to pay
for medical care or emergency-room services in their country to facilities
in the United States, where their treatment is mandated by federal law,
authorities said yesterday.
"...The patients are being transported through the U.S.-Mexico border's many
unguarded crossings when hospitals along the border are reporting losses of
more than $200 million in unreimbursed costs for treating illegal aliens,
and the numbers continue to rise."
- Washington Times, 12/12/02
************************************
Denial...or Just Wishful Thinking?
"Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe yesterday said
Democrats focused too narrowly during the election on issues such as a
Medicare prescription-drug benefit and Social Security, rather than
delivering a coherent economic message.
"While he acknowledged that President Bush and the Republicans ran an
effective campaign in 2002, he said Republicans did not win a mandate last
month. . . . Mr. McAuliffe said he is confident Democrats will win back
seats in Congress in 2004 and win the presidency."
- Associated Press, 12/12/02

I Want My S-U-V
"Americans like the environment. But this November's elections also
demonstrate that Americans don't particularly like the environmental
movement. Why? Perhaps it's the moral self-righteousness, political
shrillness, and, well, sheer loopiness that is part and parcel of Green
rhetoric today. The growing campaign to shame people out of their SUVs is a
clear case in point.
"...For shrillness...you can't beat the indefatigable Arianna Huffington or
her sidekick, Bill Maher (late of 'Politically Incorrect'). Mrs. Huffington,
for her part, has put together a national ad campaign arguing that, if you'
re driving an SUV, you're complicit in al Qaeda's terrorism. Mr. Maher, not
to be outdone, has written a book titled 'When You Ride Alone You Ride With
bin Laden.'
"Indeed, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting some smug Blue-state
wise guy who relishes turning the tables on SUV-driving 'Red America' for
their supposed lack of patriotism."
- Jerry Taylor of the Cato Institute
************************************
Why Not Just Kill It Outright?
"AmeriCorps, the national Peace Corps-like program initiated by the Clinton
administration in 1993, has temporarily frozen enrollment of volunteers
because of a lack of government funding. The freeze was imposed Nov. 22 when
AmeriCorps' parent agency, the Corporation for National and Community
Service (CNCS), found that the money needed to fully support all of the
program's 50,000 new members was not available since Congress has not yet
approved a federal budget."
- Washington Times, 12/12/02

The Bill Clinton Adult Book Store
"A group of critics of Bill Clinton...has plans to counter the former
president's library in Little Rock with a 'library' filled with rooms such
as the Hillary Hall of Shame, Pardons for Dollars and National Insecurity
Hall. They're looking at real estate in downtown Little Rock, seeking for a
site close to Mr. Clinton's library."
- Washington Times, 12/12/02
