federal authorities confirmed yesterday."

- Washington Times, 12/14/02

Security Begins At Home

"As the United States readies for renewed conflict against Iraq, it's high
time to think about securing our own borders before we commit to protecting
Kuwait's and Saudi Arabia's."

Replacing the Elephant with an Albatross

"Whatever the issue and whatever the election, Mr. Lott's statements are
going to be a recurring distraction from the serious concerns his party, the
Senate, and the country will be confronting.

"...Remarks like Mr. Lott's will be a permanent albatross around the necks
of Republican candidates trying to win the votes of blacks or of others who
want no part of a racist past that was overcome at great cost.

"The position of black Republicans will be undermined especially, if not
made untenable. And any blacks considering becoming Republican candidates,
or even Republican voters, will have to have some long second thoughts."

- Columnist Thomas Sowell

Lott-a Angst in GOP Ranks

"Among some conservatives, Mr. Lott was already in trouble for cutting too
many deals with Democrats when they controlled the Senate. Mr. Lott is
believed to lack a strong ideological foundation, preferring to perpetuate
his own power and perks rather than advance a uniquely Republican agenda.
His remarks at the Thurmond party may contribute to unease among his fellow
Senate Republicans, some of whom believe it is time for a new leader.

"...Trent Lott might as well be a Democratic Party mole, placed among
Republicans to cause his party severe political damage. Republican senators,
some of whom have wanted to move in a new direction, must now decide whether
Mr. Lott is a hindrance to the party."

- Columnist Cal Thomas

Come On Guys, Privatize!

"The postal system, whose last overhaul was in the 1970s, could face major
changes in the future as its mission and operations come under review from a
commission set up Wednesday by President Bush. . . . The commission will
consider ways to make the postal system more efficient and financially
viable. . . . On Tuesday, the Postal Service said it lost $676 million in
the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30."

Quackin' Like a Turkey

"Commission on the Postal Service members should avoid the Post Office's
preferred proposal for a taxpayer-backed agency that acts like a business
but remains a bureaucracy. Such a plan may look, walk, and quack like a
duck, but it's a turkey compared to a truly private mail delivery structure.
. . . Only a fully privatized structure, subject to the discipline of
competition, consumers, and capital markets, stands a chance of economic
success."

- John Berthoud, president, National Taxpayers Union, 12/11/02

Lawsuit Abuse Over Asbestos

"If you fear your working conditions might one day give you cancer, should
you be able to sue your employer and collect damages even before you're
sick? Some of the nation's most prominent trial lawyers say yes. About 700
of them are behind the explosion in asbestos litigation.

"Since 2000, more than 100,000 claims have been filed against scores of
companies. One study estimates there may be 3 million claims before it's all
over. One jury awarded $150 million to six plaintiffs who were exposed to
asbestos dust but don't have cancer -- they just fear that one day they
might get it."

- Columnist John Meroney, Los Angeles Times, 12/10/02

Disorder in the Court

"Just when you thought all the idiotic lawsuits had already been filed,
this: The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has filed suit
in - wanna guess? Kee-reckt! - San Francisco, against the California Milk
Board for its advertising campaign showing cows strolling around a meadow,
allegedly being happy.

"An attorney for PETA said 'the campaign's catch phrase, 'Great cheese comes
from happy cows. Happy cows come from California,' improperly portrays
idyllic conditions for dairy cows and misleads consumers.'

"Who will PETA call as a witness, Elsie? Will she testify that she was
exploited by Borden all those years and was forced to feign contentment
under a threat of being turned into...into - what's the word I'm searching
for? Oh yes, Baloney."

- Rich Galen, "Mullings," 12/13/02

Jackpot Justice

" 'Two former Jefferson County (Mississippi) jurors have filed a $6 billion
lawsuit against CBS' '60 Minutes' and a newspaper owner over comments about
the size of jury awards in the county,' the Associated Press reports from
Fayette, Miss. 'Anthony Berry and Johnny Anderson said the news program
defamed them in a segment that called the county a haven for 'jackpot
justice.' '

"CBS aired a clip in which one of the plaintiffs in the case on which
Anderson was a juror joked that juries 'awarded these people this money
because they felt as if they were going to get a cut off of it.' The award
in that case was a comparatively modest $150 million, so if Anderson gets
what he's asking for, it'll be a lot more than a cut."

- Best of the Web, 12/10/02

The D-Triple-C's "Silly Argument"

"Democrats, and many members of the national media, have spent more than a
month arguing that the Republicans did as well as they did because the
Democratic Party ran an 'issueless campaign.' It's time to reject that silly
argument...

"The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spent more than $76
million, much of it on TV spots that attacked Republicans on corporate
accountability, Social Security, prescription drugs and the economy. Anyone
who watched dozens and dozens of those television spots couldn't possibly
believe that the Democratic Party soft-pedaled issues."

- Political analyst Stuart Rothenberg, Roll Call
