Goin' for the Record

"Statisticians believe Trent Lott is now on track to break Bill Clinton's
single-season record for public apologies."

- Columnist Ann Coulter

Misguided Ideological Purity?

"The GOP went wrong in 1964 when Barry Goldwater, no racist, tragically
voted against the Civil Rights Act out of misguided ideological purity."

- Former Bob Dole running mate Jack Kemp

Barry Right, Jack Wrong

"In 1964, Goldwater told the nation that the latest civil rights act was a
mirage, that 'no law can make one person like another if he doesn't want to.
' Although he had a strong record as a desegregationist in Arizona and was
committed to integration in his personal life, Goldwater knew that the
public accommodation clauses in the act would 'destroy the rights of some
under the false banner of promoting the civil rights of others.' As
governmental mandates pile up on businesses, we see that Goldwater was
right."

- Tom Jenney, The Goldwater Institute, 11/4/02

If Goldwater Had Been Elected in 1964, Lott Wouldn't Be Having All These
Problems...

"(Barry) Goldwater was no racist; early in his career as a Phoenix city
council member, he aggressively supported local civil rights ordinances. But
as his conservatism deepened, he grew first skeptical and then fearful about
the use of government for social engineering. 'You cannot pass a law that
will make me like you -- or you like me,' Goldwater told one rally. 'That is
something that can only happen in our hearts.'

"He understood, too, that government-mandated affirmative action was merely
the flip side of segregationist racialism: 'It reintroduces through the back
door the very principle of allocation by race that makes compulsory
segregation morally wrong and offensive to freedom.' And, that, to Barry
Goldwater, was the bottom line. 'Our aim, as I understand it, is neither to
establish a segregated society nor to establish an integrated society,' he
said. 'It is to preserve a free society.' "

- Columnist Glenn Garvin, ReaonOnline, March 2002

Whiteys, Hold Your Tongues

"In the old feudal system, there were no First Amendment rights. The legally
privileged were free to engage in hate speech and to verbally harass others,
but any commoner who replied in kind could be sued or have his tongue cut
out.

"Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott still has his tongue, but just barely. He
used his tongue in a way that gave offense to the new aristocrats. Black
Americans have been granted the right to be offended by any words they don't
like and to extract retribution. The offending speaker finds himself forced
into contrition and humiliating apologies. Often the penalty is a destroyed
career."

- Columnist Paul Craig Roberts

First Black President Weighs In

"Former President Bill Clinton said yesterday incoming Senate Majority
Leader Trent Lott's remarks about Sen. Strom Thurmond are just a public
manifestation of a Republican strategy to suppress black voters and appeal
to whites on a racial basis.

" 'He just embarrassed them by saying in Washington what they do on the back
roads every day,' Mr. Clinton told CNN outside a business luncheon he was
attending. 'How do they think they got a majority in the South anyway?' he
said. 'I think what they are really upset about is that he made public their
strategy.'"

- Washington Times, 2/19/02

The First Black Senator

"(After) watching Black Entertainment Television early this week, this
author has had a change of heart about the Mississippi Senator. It seems the
'Magnolia State' now has its first black Senator - because Trent Lott is now
toast - burnt toast.

"...If this writer had a chance to do so, I would ask Trent Lott only one
question - the question many Republican voters should be asking: '...Senator
Lott, if you really think segregation is immoral and shouldn't be tolerated
in today's society, why did you all but sanction a segregationist policy by
being a guest on Black Entertainment Television?'

"See the hypocrisy here? There is no White Entertainment Television, and
there isn't another medium in the country that has such a closed door policy
regarding races. Did the Senator even know that BET isn't even owned by
black people any more?"

- J.J. Johnson, publisher, SierraTimes.com, 12/19/02

BET Interview Made Bad Situation Worse

"In his interview Monday on Black Entertainment Television, Mr. Lott called
the controversy a 'wake-up call,' talked of a bipartisan 'task force of
reconciliation,' came out for 'across the board' affirmative action and
savaged his own lawmaking decisions with the bizarre claim that 'my actions,
I think, don't reflect my voting record.'

"Read between the lines: He will now take his cues from the Democrats and
their allies like the NAACP and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.
Thus the original tragedy - remarks that certainly sounded racist at Strom
Thurmond's birthday bash - is compounded by his new posture as
groveler-in-chief of the Republican Party."

- Abigail Thernstrom, Republican appointee on the U.S. Commission on Civil
Rights, New York Times

Forever Compromised

"(Trent Lott) is now so politically compromised that in his Black
Entertainment Television interview he declared 'across the board' support
for affirmative action, vowed to rethink his support for Judge Charles
Pickering, and agreed to a 'civil rights tour' with Rep. John Lewis. A
vacuum of white guilt as wide as the Grand Canyon has opened in him, and he
will never again see civil rights, welfare, judgeships or education with a
clear eye."

- Columnist Shelby Steele, Wall Street Journal

Pander Left, Abandon Right

"...Trent Lott's support within his party is melting away, and right now he
is nowhere near the 26 votes from GOP Senate colleagues he needs to retain
his job. . . . It is Mr. Lott's failure to be more than a deal-making
legislative tactician that has ensured conservatives have few qualms about
abandoning him in the wake of his racial remarks. . . . Conservatives are
outraged at the damage Mr. Lott has caused to their efforts to reach out to
minority communities and advocate principled race-neutral policies. Mr.
Lott's outrageous pandering to his critics has only stoked the anger and
disappointment."

- John Fund's Political Diary, 12/19/02

Heavy Price to Pay for Defending Lott

"The media furor and frenzy may have caused some Republican leaders to
instinctively come to Mr. Lott's defense against overblown charges.
Moreover, a sense of decency probably made them reluctant to publicly
humiliate the man by stripping him of his majority leadership position. But,
make no mistake, the Republicans have already paid a price, and it's only
the down payment. That Mr. Lott did not step aside himself is a greater
disqualification for leadership than anything he said."

- Columnist Thomas Sowell

***********************************

Left Salivates Over New Opportunities

"Whether Trent Lott stays or goes, Democrats and civil rights groups see his
apparent nostalgia for a segregated past as a golden opportunity to make
some legislative gains. . . . Democrats say issues that Lott might help them
push include an expansion of hate crimes legislation to cover sexual
orientation, which Republicans blocked this year; an increase in the minimum
wage; national legislation banning racial profiling; reform of death penalty
laws, which activists say are used against minorities more than anyone else;
and AIDS funding, especially for Africa. Consideration of any of those
issues previously would have been unlikely in a Republican-controlled
Congress. Democrats also hope to bring up more affirmative action programs,
which Lott said he supports."

- Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 12/19/02
