And Just As Distasteful

Affirming Equal Treatment Under Law

"In its traditional sense, affirmative action meant nothing more than
enforcing nondiscrimination laws coupled with proactive steps, such as
outreach and training, to increase the pool of eligible candidates. . . .
The president should make clear that he supports the original meaning of
affirmative action, but that he opposes the illegitimate use of racial and
ethnic preferences. If he does this, he will enjoy overwhelming political
support."

- Columnist Linda Chavez, OpinionJournal.com, 1/8/03

White House Goin' Wobbly on Race Case

"President Bush is unlikely to join a Supreme Court battle over whether
public universities may favor racial or ethnic groups for admissions.

"Two sources close to the administration deliberations told The Washington
Times that the White House has received a legal brief from the Justice
Department backing white students who say they were denied admission to the
University of Michigan because of 'race-conscious measures.'

"However, the consensus among administration officials working on the issue
is that the White House will not file any brief with the Supreme Court. But
several sources said things could change before the Jan. 16 filing
deadline."

- Washington Times, 1/9/03

Murray's Mouth

"Sen. Patty Murray -- never known as one of the sharpest tools in the
drawer -- was having a casual chat with honor students at a Vancouver,
Washington high school on December 18 when this Democrat unleashed a series
of real whoppers about Osama bin Laden.

" 'Why are people so supportive of him in many countries?' she asked. 'He
has been in many countries that are riddled with poverty...He's been out in
these countries for decades building roads, building schools, building
infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care
facilities, and the people are extremely grateful.'

"Sen. Murray was digging herself a public-relations hole, carrying on as if
al-Qaeda was an appendage of the Salvation Army serving kids breakfast,
earnest servants of the poor who just happen to be killers in their spare
time. Not even Osama would dare flood al-Jazeera with this sap. Plain and
simple, the liberal democrat from Washington was making it all up as she
went along, going above and beyond the al-Qaeda public-relations line."

- Brent Bozell of the Media Research Center, 1/7/03

Mario's Mouth

"On MSNBC's 'Donahue' show Monday night, (former New York Gov. Mario) Cuomo
infuriated some conservatives by saying the reason Democrats don't have
successful talk-show hosts like (Rush) Limbaugh is that Democrats 'believe
in subtlety. We believe in telling the whole truth.' He said Limbaugh-type
conservatives 'write their message with crayons. We use fine-point quills.'"

Even Libs Ain't Buyin' What Libs Are Sellin'

"Let the liberal Democrats fool themselves into believing that getting a
foot in the cable or talk radio door will solve their problems. It won't.
That's because there are already numerous outlets for the liberal Democratic
point of view, and it seems every liberal show host is boring. . . . Even
liberals don't watch or listen to liberal talk shows."

Takin' a Bite Out of the Big Apple

"President Bush's decision to hold the 2004 Republican convention in New
York puts Hillary Rodham Clinton's party on the defensive and means he'll
really try to win the state - which would make it impossible for any
Democrat to beat him. . . . If New York votes for Bush in 2004 - as it did
twice for Ronald Reagan - that could change the whole national dynamic and
raise real questions about Hillary Clinton's potential as a national
candidate. If Republicans can make it in New York, they can make it
anywhere."

- New York Post columnist Deborah Orin

Gephardt Could Be Toughest of the Weaklings

"Although he isn't flashy or flush with new ideas, Dick Gephardt is a safe
and comfortable choice for Democrats. He hails from Missouri, the most
reliable presidential bellwether, which George W. Bush carried only narrowly
in 2000. He still knows how to appeal to independent voters with stances
against partial-birth abortions and for a flatter income tax system. At
least one Democratic governor calls him 'as reliable a party stalwart voice
as Al Gore, but without the personality quirks.'

"Should he be the candidate to mount the speaker's rostrum in Boston in
August 2004 to accept the party's nomination, no one will be able to say
Democrats have nominated a sacrificial candidate. The problem the party
faces is that absent a serious economic downturn, the odds look long of any
Democrat defeating George W. Bush."

Lawsuit Vultures Open New Front

"...London's Independent reports that 'after-school detention for pupils has
been banned in hundreds of schools across Scotland amid fears that the
punishment could be in breach of human rights.' A 15-year-old girl who got
detention filed a lawsuit claiming that the punishment 'seriously disrupted
her education and violated her human rights.'"

The High Cost of Ambulance Chasing

"Personal injury representation can be and has been one of the more
lucrative concentrations in the practice of law. Just ask the trial lawyers
association and look at the spiraling costs of insurance and what they have
done and are threatening to do to our way of life. Doctors are fleeing the
profession daily because of the horrendous costs of protecting themselves
from malpractice suits. Auto insurance is through the ceiling."

John Edwards of North Carolina is a stinkin' rich personal injury
lawyer...not a champion of regular people]

Out of His Depth in a Parking Lot Puddle

"PeopleNews.com reports that Sean Penn, just back from Baghdad, was spotted
vacationing at a Mexican resort: 'According to one amused holidaymaker:
'People went up to him and said real sarcastically, "Hey Sean, How's Iraq?"
or "Yo man, heard Iraq was really cool". The spy continued, 'The thing is,
he didn't realise people were making fun of him, and would always look at
them totally seriously and say, 'Interesting. Iraq was veeery interesting.'

Rummy Makes It Easier to Kill Enemy

"Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld announced yesterday he has given new
power to the nation's covert warriors to kill and capture al Qaeda
operatives and other terrorists. In a significant transformation of U.S.
Special Operations Command, Mr. Rumsfeld said the command in Tampa, Fla.,
and its satellite units around the world, can now plan and execute their own
hunt-and-destroy missions."

Bad Moon Rising Over Britain

"Having just spent a week in England listening to bitter and angry
complaints about American policy on Iraq, I can report of levels of
anti-Americanism unsuspected by most in the United States. It is a mood of
whiny petulance that is deeply unflattering for the British, a nation with
otherwise proud traditions of fighting and winning wars."

Private Property Rights Score Victory

Representative Richard Pombo (R-CA) was named Chairman of the Committee on
Resources on Thursday. The Resources committee has jurisdiction over a wide
range of issues vitally important to private property rights and use of the
public lands, including agencies within the Interior Department, the
Endangered Species Act, water, timber, mining and fisheries management.

"Richard Pombo is straight from the grassroots. He has been there for us
time and time again in Congress, from adding common sense to the Endangered
Species Act to stopping attempted land grab legislation to promoting
multiple use of federal lands," said Chuck Cushman of the American Land
Rights Association. "With Richard Pombo as chairman, everyone will be heard
from and the grassroots will have a seat at the table."

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
