So True

University Has It Just Wrong

"If the (Michigan) university's (racial preference) policy was to give an
extra twenty points to the white students, rather than the black students,
what would that be called?"

Prez Gets It Just Right

"Our Constitution makes it clear that people of all races must be treated
equally under the law. Quota systems that use race to include or exclude
people from higher education and the opportunities it offers are divisive,
unfair and impossible to square with the Constitution."

- President George W. Bush, 1/15/03

It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

We won a major battle yesterday when our President agreed to lend the weight
and prestige of the nation's highest office to an argument in a Supreme
Court case involving racial preferences in college admissions. The Justice
Department brief makes it "perfectly clear" that two wrongs don't make a
right and the ultimate objective and constitutional imperative is to
continue moving this country toward a color-blind society where EQUAL
justice under law is again the law of the land.

We thank and congratulate the President for taking the tough political path
in this matter, and I want to thank the almost-9,000 of you who signed our
petition from Ward Connerly urging the White House not to sacrifice
principle for politics in this important matter. You indeed had a tremendous
impact on this decision. As you'll recall, only a week ago it was widely
rumored and believed that the White House, in light of the Trent Lott
fiasco, would simply sit this case out. They didn't. So take a bow.

That being said, this is no time to rest on our laurels. As my friend John
Nienstedt in San Diego noted yesterday, we now "need to back this President
up with letters to the editors, calls to talk shows and generally showing
support instead of sitting on our hands." And he's exactly right.

Like clockwork, the Democrats came out of the woodwork yesterday to twist
and misrepresent this issue for raw, political advantage. We can't allow
their continued race-baiting to succeed. Write your congressman, write you
editor, call in to talk radio and send emails making the case for ending ALL
forms of discrimination.

And you might consider sending one additional email.

For those of you who don't know or remember, Ward Connerly - the man who
penned our petition and led this effort - is a University of California
Regent who also happens to be black. A few years ago he led the Prop 209
fight to eliminate racial preferences in college admissions in California.
The ballot initiative won overwhelmingly, but Ward took a lot of shots and a
suffered a lot of grief in the process.

Other so-called black "leaders" of the Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton variety
regularly refer to Ward as a "sell out," an "Uncle Tom" and an "Oreo" (black
on the outside/white on the inside). But that's probably not the worst of
it.

You see, there still ARE some white folks who harbor racial prejudice and
bigotry against black folks simply because they're...well, black. There
really and truly ARE some racists among us. So by championing the cause of a
color-blind American society by opposing race-based quotas and preferences,
Ward not only incurs the wrath of many fellow blacks, but he also advances a
position held by some whites who hate him just because of the color of his
skin.

That's GOT to gall him to no end.

Yet Ward marches on, doing the right thing regardless. It takes a lot of
guts to swim against such a tide. But Ward Connerly doesn't quit and he
doesn't back down. In fact, he's already leading a new effort in California
to force the government to remove those little "race boxes" from all
government forms. If only he were in Congress!

Anyway, if you have a spare moment, why not drop a short email to Ward and
express your support and appreciation for this great and tireless
conservative on the front lines of our movement. Send your email to:

And the (Race-Baiting) Beat Goes On

"Both Clintons went before the cameras to say that the Republicans were
upset with Lott only for spilling the beans about their racism. The NAACP
last year gave a grade of F to every Republican senator, even Lincoln
Chafee. Those who would prefer to believe that all the Republicans are
racist will draw that conclusion. But others will reason that the
civil-rights group is liberal, and an adjunct of the Democratic party.

"Most people understand that disagreement with Kweisi Mfume is not evidence
of racism, and Republicans who are falsely charged with it for taking a
conservative position need only respond that they will not capitulate to
liberal attempts to stifle debate. The Republican party and the conservative
cause may have suffered some damage because of Lott's gaffe, but that damage
will be lasting only if Republicans act as though they are guilty of the
Clintons' charges."

Flag Banning?

"The Confederate flag should not fly anywhere in the United States, (Rep.
Dick Gephardt, Missouri Democrat)...declared Saturday in Columbia, S.C. . .
. '(M)y own personal feeling is that the Confederate flag no longer has a
place flying anytime, anywhere in our great nation,' (he said in a prepared
statement)."

Big Al Says: "Show Me the Money!"

"Democratic Party presidential hopeful Rev. Al Sharpton allegedly snubbed an
NAACP 'Stop the Violence' conference in crime-ridden Oakland, Calif., Friday
night, pulling out as keynote speaker at the last minute to address another
group that offered to pay him. 'The Oakland NAACP director Shannon Reeves
had invited him a year ago and he had agreed to come,' said Guardian Angels
founder Curtis Sliwa, a Sharpton critic who was slated to be keynote speaker
at the conference the next night. But less than 24-hours before the event,
the firebrand presidential wannabe pulled the plug on the NAACP booking,
said Sliwa."

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
