The Perfect Democrat Presidential Candidate?

"A D.C. native with bank-robbery experience going back 40 years bungled his
latest attempt by locking his keys in the getaway car and shooting himself
in the leg as he fled on foot with $100 bills flying from his pockets,
police said yesterday."

You Can't Fix Stupid

"sooo, I go to Duke, and yes it is ultraliberal, as are most college
campuses today, but I also believe it is a place where we embrace radical
points of view as an integral part of the marketplace of ideas. is Laura
Whitehorn a role model? no, certainly not. She is a criminal--but she is a
criminal who has served her time. In the united states, we believe in
giving people second chances."

So writes a Duke student (name withheld to protect the guilty) after we blew
the whistle on the university's scheduled appearance on March 3 of a
convicted bomber of the U.S. Capitol. And yep, this appears to be a perfect
example of the results of "whole language" education, 'cause that's exactly
how the note was received.

But grammar aside, what a head full of mush. "We embrace radical points of
view as an integral part of the marketplace of ideas"? Who are they gonna
invite next? bin Laden? Saddam Hussein? SEN. PATTY MURRAY? And what kind of
"second chance" would the victims of this radical terrorist bomber have
received had anyone been killed?

I worry for this young person. Ignorance can be cured. But you can't fix
stupid.

The Thelma & Louise of Bombers

For those of you who may not recall the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Capitol,
here are some additional details: It was done to protest the rescue of those
students on Grenada by President Reagan. And it was apparently targeted at
Republicans, as the bomb was placed in a rest room next to the GOP
cloakroom. And Laura Whitehorn's convicted accomplice in the bombing was one
Linda Sue Evans. That name ring a bell? Well, if you had memorized the list
of last-minute pardons coughed up by Bill Clinton it would.'cause Evans got
one. Skunks of a feather, stink together.

Duke Shrugs

Statement Regarding Guest Speaker at African & African-American Studies
Program

By David Jarmul [[EMAIL PROTECTED]]
Associate Vice President, News and Communications
Duke University

January 17, 2003

"Duke University has received inquiries in response to a January 16
commentary in the Wall Street Journal's online 'Opinion Journal' regarding
Laura Whitehorn, who is scheduled to participate on March 3 in a speaker
series at Duke. As the article notes, Ms. Whitehorn was recently released
from federal prison after serving more than 14 years for her role in
planting a bomb in the U.S. Capitol building in 1983, in protest of the U.S.
invasion of Grenada. She has been active in recent years on behalf of
prisoners who are HIV-positive.

"Ms. Whitehorn was invited to speak about HIV/AIDS in prisons. The
invitation was extended by Becky Thompson, who is a visiting professor at
Duke through the current spring semester, teaching a graduate course,
'Teaching Race, Teaching Gender,' in Duke's African & African-American
Studies Program.

"Duke does not exert control over or pressure its faculty and departments in
their selection of campus speakers. One of our nation's greatest values, and
one we at Duke celebrate, is the freedom for people to express their
thoughts openly. Students, faculty and other members of the Duke community
benefit from hearing and debating a wide variety of ideas. We have
confidence in the ability of the members of our community to analyze and
critique the arguments they hear, an activity that is central to democracy,
and to universities in particular.

"Duke hosts speakers with a wide array of views. During the week Ms.
Whitehorn will appear, for instance, it will also hold campus events on
topics ranging from spiritual responses to environmental problems to
intellectual property in cyberspace. Some speakers may hold views that
others consider too radical or tainted to be provided a forum. Nonetheless,
Duke remains committed to the academic freedom that has contributed so much
to the traditions and strength of our nation."

Bunch of Big Babies

"You remember T-ball? ... The kindergarteners played T-ball. . . . But in
one game we had a problem because after the other side was out . . . they
wouldn't put down their bats and go out in the field. . . . They thought
that once they had been at bat they were going to stay at bat, even though
their side was out and it was time for them to leave. The more I thought
about it, the more I thought maybe that is what is happening in the Senate
today."

Tax Hikes vs. Spending Cuts

You'll recall this week the disturbing decision by Georgia's newly-elected
Republican governor, Sonny Perdue, to raise taxes in order to balance his
state budget. And in Nevada, re-elected Republican Gov. Kenny Guinn is
touting new taxes in the neighborhood of $800,000 million for a budget
shortfall there.

Well, newly-elected Republican governor of Maryland is facing a massive
budget shortfall, as well. But Gov. Bob Ehrlich vowed this week to "shrink"
government instead of raising taxes. "We going to ask government to do what
thousands of Maryland families do every day," said Mr. Ehrlich, "live within
its means." Amen.

Keeping Their Priorities Straight

"My gun rights are more important than my gay rights. They're both
important, but people shouldn't assume that just because I'm gay, I should
buy into a certain political party, like the Democrats."

Another Harassment Suit Against Guns

"The nation's largest anti-gun group Thursday filed suit against the
manufacturer of the gun allegedly used by Washington, D.C.-area sniper
suspects John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo and the Washington state gun
store from which the semi-automatic rifle was allegedly lost or stolen.
Dennis Henigan, legal director of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence
(formerly known as Handgun Control, Inc.), announced the lawsuit at the
National Press Club.

".(Bushmaster vice president Allen) Faraday said anti-gun organizations -
that cannot get the American people or elected representatives to support
their disarmament agenda - are trying to achieve their goals through the
courts instead. He warned that gun manufacturers are quickly growing tired
of the harassment.

"'Groups like the Brady Campaign, that file all of these frivolous lawsuits,
at some point are going to have to take responsibility for that,' Faraday
predicted. 'Eventually, the manufacturers are going to stand up and say
enough is enough and file counter-suits.'"

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."

Quaint Notions and McDonald's

"There is no law compelling anyone to buy the biggest burger in the joint,
or supersize the fries, or demand a jumbo soft drink or sundae with nuts.
There is such a thing as free will, even at McDonald's, and the virtues of
restraint and moderation remain intact."

Fox in the Henhouse

"To a lot of observers, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's surprise decision to
enlist in the Senate Armed Services Committee is proof-positive she lusts to
be commander-in-chief. And some are pretty livid about it. 'Oh, no,' groaned
Elaine Donnelly of the conservative Center for Military Readiness. 'That's
the worst thing I've heard in a long time. She's perfectly capable of using
this to position herself as someone who is pro-military in a dishonest way.'

Whitewashing Al Sharpton

"Among the earliest and clearest voices to condemn Trent Lott's benighted
remarks last month were those of conservatives and Republicans, who were
repelled by his nostalgia for segregation and quick to call for his
ouster. When will liberals and Democrats show the same maturity and
forcefully repudiate the noxious racial lout in their own tent, New York
demagogue Al Sharpton?

"This is a subject of more than idle interest.Al Sharpton says he is running
for president. . . . But it is impossible to imagine, say, David Duke
running for president as a Republican and not being shunned by every leading
figure in the party. . . . No one would roll over for Duke. Why are they
rolling over for Sharpton? After all, Sharpton's rsum is at least as vile
as Duke's.

"...If Sharpton were a white skinhead, he would be a political leper,
spurned everywhere but the fringe. But far from being spurned, he is shown
much deference.Democrats embrace him.Politicians court him.And journalists
report on his comings and goings while politely sidestepping his career as a
hatemongering racial hustler. . . . Sharpton is a vicious liar and a
dangerous bigot. As a matter of moral hygiene, his party and the press should
be able to say so, too."

Brain Surgery & Affirmative Action

action racism. Let's say they need atransplant. There aredoctors ready to do
the operation. One got his credentials through affirmative action; the other
one through guts, studying and effort.Which one willchoose? Askliberal this

Hate Crime Laws Double-Standard

"The Family Foundation of America was celebrating this week about the
Virginia Senate's decision to keep homosexuals off a list of groups
protected by hate crimes laws. . . . Don't get me wrong: I'm against all
hate- crimes laws. But if you're going to have them, they should at least be
applied fairly. Carving out an exception for homosexuals makes no logical
sense at all."
