Honoring the Gipper

"A resolution that would create an annual Ronald Reagan Day to pay tribute
to the former president was introduced with bipartisan support yesterday in
the Maryland Senate. . . . Some Democratic lawmakers were squeamish about
supporting a Ronald Reagan Day. 'You would have to be really special for
that, and I don't view [Mr. Reagan] in that regard,' said Sen. Edward J.
Kasemeyer, Baltimore County Democrat."

The Bottom Line

"The lawsuit culture makes everyone pay more for health care, and it is
causing many parts of America to lose fine doctors."

- Vice President Dick Cheney in remarks at the 30th Annual CPAC conference,

GOP Country

"The (Rocky) mountain states are increasingly Republican, due in part to an
influx of conservative voters fleeing California. The most Republican states
in the country are Utah, Idaho and Dick Cheney's Wyoming."

- John Fund's Political Diary, 1/29/03

Hey, Gov. "Dendahl" Has a Nice Ring to It

"I'm sorry to have to tell the people of New Mexico this, but it's not the
number of the U.S. Highway (666) running through their state that
'discourages tourism and economic development', it's their Governor,
(Democrat) Bill Richardson who does that. If they go through the trouble of
changing the name of the highway, maybe they ought to also consider going
through the trouble of changing the name of their governor, too."

Um, Good Question

"In your News and Views of today (January 30) there was a piece concerning
illegal aliens attending Virginia's public colleges and universities
(receiving lower in-state tuition rates). Not sure I understand this - if
there is knowledge these 'students' are illegal aliens, why are they allowed
to attend any college - even if they pay full tuition? I thought the 'law'
stated they are to be deported?"

Palm Beach Americans

Radio talk-show host Don Crawford in Austin, Texas, is having a little fun
at the expense of the anti-war crowd by urging pro-American motorists who
support the President to turn on their car headlights between the hours of 8
and 10 p.m. every night. He notes that "not only are virtually all drivers
in Austin supporting the war by turning on their headlights, but the same is
happening in nearly every metroplex in America!" What's sad is that some
dim-witted people are contacting Crawford not knowing whether or not he's
just yanking their chain. And these people VOTE! Be afraid.

Calling a Spade a Spade

"'I'm tired of being labeled anti-American because I ask questions,' says
anti-American actress Susan Sarandon. Uh, Sue, don't a lot of people ask
questions without being labeled anti-American? Could it be that the reason
you're labeled anti-American is that you're, uh, anti-American?"

Uncle Sam's Mother-In-Law

"In contemplating the divisions between America and the 'old Europe' of
France and Germany, some commentators, noting the Continent's abject
dependence on America and the feebleness of its rage, have likened it to a
rebellious teenager. . . . In truth, old Europe is more like America's
battle-axe mother-in-law -- shrill, imperious, meddling, hypercritical. Once
a vibrant and attractive young woman, today she is embittered by the ravages
of old age.

"As unpleasant as she may be, the burden falls on America to maintain a
degree of civility; after all, we married into this family. But as the head
of our own household, we can't afford to take the old lady's dotty advice.
Ideally we'd have the forbearance to pretend to listen respectfully to her
every word, then go about our business ignoring what she says. But we're
only human; if we occasionally lose patience, that's entirely
understandable."

- James Taranto, Best of the Web, 1/29/03

New vs. Old Europe

"The 'new Europe' cleared its throat yesterday, and 'old Europe' burped.
Leaders of eight nations of new Europe signed an op-ed essay, published in
the Wall Street Journal and newspapers in Britain and Europe, praising the
resolve of George W. Bush and the United States for standing up to Saddam
Hussein, and not so gently chiding the stale funk and pious poltroonery of
(France's) Jacques Chirac and (Germany's) Gerhard Schroeder.

"...This remarkable document comes just in time, not just as a reminder to
Americans that Herr Schroeder and M. Chirac no more speak for 'the Europeans
' than Barbra Streisand and Ramsey Clark and their coterie of aging leftist
malcontents and Hollywood coxcombs speak for 'the Americans.' . . . But more
important, it's a reminder to Saddam Hussein that the gluttons and
greedheads of France and Germany speak only to him, that he takes at his own
peril the notion that Franco-German pouting and cowardice is evidence of
fatal weakness in the West."

Gun Outrage in Brooklyn

"Ron Dixon acted the way any of us would have - if, that is, we had the same
courage. He pointed his 9-mm and fired. Mr. Dixon shot the intruder he had
found rummaging through his 2-year-old son's room in his home in the
Canarsie section of Brooklyn, N.Y. For that, Dixon is facing jail time. . .
. For the Brooklyn district attorney (Charles Hynes), a gun is a gun is a
gun, whether it's wielded by a punk or by Ron Dixon.

"...Prison inmates tell Justice Department interviewers that while
committing a crime, running into a citizen armed to defend himself is on of
their greatest fears. And so it should be. Mr. Hynes, and other gun
control supporters, please take note - criminals should have to worry about
the consequences of the defensive use of guns, not homeowners like Ron
Dixon."

Guns for Tots

"The Manhattan Libertarian party launched its 'Guns for Tots' campaign to
protest a New York City Council bill that would make toy guns illegal in New
York City. Worried about the loss of 'one of the most cherished rites of
childhood,' spokesman Jim Lesczynski says his party plans to distribute toy
guns, including cap guns and water pistols, to New York children whose
favorite playthings may soon be contraband."

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
