Hot Off the Press: New "Muth's Truths"

How is it that the United States is on the brink of military action over in
Iraq in 2003? Well, you can thank the peanut gallery of "cheese-eating
surrender monkeys," "can't we all just get along" Hollywood windbags, "give
peace a chance" anti-war hippie-wannabes and, of course, the Democrats. But
I repeat myself.

Hello, Jacques?

Sometimes it just feels good to vent...even though you KNOW it won't do any
good. If that urge has hit you in the past couple of weeks over our
"friends" in France, News & Views reader Mitchell Tracy provided us with a
web site where you can toast the French directly in an email to their
president. Go to:

Race Hustler Scaring Bejeepers Out of D's

"The Rev. Al Sharpton's presidential bid is sending shudders through the
Democrats' rank and file, who fear that his fiery, racial rhetoric could
divide their party and lead to defeat in 2004.

"...Few Democrats - especially the spokesmen for the six other presidential
contenders - want to talk on the record about what they think of Mr.
Sharpton's prospective presidential candidacy. . . . But privately some of
them worry Mr. Sharpton's brand of racial politics will tar their party and
repel white Democrats in the South and independent swing voters across the
country.

"'This is not good for our party. This could take us back to the 1980s when
Jesse Jackson's candidacy divided the electorate and led us down the road to
defeat,' said a Democratic adviser and campaign strategist who did not want
to be identified."

Instant Recall

"Gray Davis is clearly spooked by the prospect, however dim it may be, of
becoming the first California governor to be dumped from office in midterm.

"Davis' popularity among California voters, which has lingered in the sub-50
percent range for nearly two years, has plunged even lower in recent weeks.
Most private polling puts it in the 30 percent to 35 percent range now.

"California voters are notoriously fickle. And if only one in three voters
likes the job Davis is doing, it means that if the newly minted recall drive
could muster enough money and momentum to reach the ballot, he would be in
grave danger of being dumped."

- Dan Walters, Sacramento Bee, 2/16/03

The Fat Police

"Advocates of primary enforcement argue that seat belt usage decreases the
risk of injury or death in the event of an automobile accident - and of
course they're absolutely correct. It is smart to wear your seat belt. But
it's also smart to eat right and exercise - and the consequences of failing
to do either are at least as serious in potential and in fact as failing to
buckle-up.

"...So - should dietary codes and exercise regimens be enforced at
ticket-point? When police sport an obviously obese person walking down the
street with a super-sized order of fries in his pudgy fingers, should they
be able to stop him and issue a 'fatty fine?'

"...Neo-puritanism works both ways - and if the increasingly overused 'for
your own good' argument is going to become the standard by which we permit
government to henpeck us, there will be no aspect of our lives - private as
well as public - that won't eventually come under the scrutiny of some
Dudley Do-right with a badge and the authority of the state behind him."

- Columnist Eric Peters

Race Preferences Challenged in Texas

"A taxpayer-funded scholarship offered by the Texas Department of
Transportation that excludes white applicants is discriminatory and needs to
be opened to all races, an attorney for the American Civil Rights Institute
(www.acri.org) said yesterday.

"The California-based civil rights group, led by University of California
regent Ward Connerly, ran an advertisement this week in the Daily Texan
student newspaper at the University of Texas at Austin, informing readers of
the scholarship and saying: 'If you are white, you may be a victim of
illegal discrimination.'"

The Continuing War on Air Travel

"The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has successfully treated me with
aviation aversion therapy. Occasionally, I must fly somewhere. I don't vomit
in anticipation, but I succumb to an almost uncontrollable rage on route to
the airport that's intensified by the question, 'May I see your ticket and
photo ID?'

"Being asked for a ticket and photo ID is reasonable, but it's a precursor
of what follows. My carry-on luggage is tossed on the conveyor belt for
X-ray. I walk through the metal detector. Suspenders, watches, wallet,
cigarettes, tiepin, belt and ring can set off the alarm. I've learned that,
so those items are removed and placed in my brief case, and so are my
eyeglasses.

"Despite demetalizing myself, it's no guarantee that the alarm won't go off.
When it does, a guard escorts me to a chair to wand my legs and crotch. He
orders me to take off my shoes, and they're X-rayed. Finally, there's the
order for me to stand, arms outstretched, for more wanding.

"Guards sometimes attempt to exchange pleasantries. I just look at them
saying not one word, for fear that saying what I felt would lead to arrest.
Instead of pleasantries, they might apologize for the delay, inconvenience
and sheer stupidity of a procedure that imposes high costs on millions upon
millions of Americans who are no air safety threat whatsoever."

Flushing Money Down a Rat Hole

"Never have so many paid so much to so few for so little. I refer here, of
course, to American families' expenditures on college education. . . . (F)or
the student majoring in subjects such as English, political science or
sociology, or in feel-aggrieved programs such as women's studies, students
are paying enormous sums of money to be politicized by highly paid and
under-worked radicals."

- Columnist Dennis Prager

An NEH Program We Can Support

"(President Bush) has requested $25 million for the National Endowment of
Humanities to promote American history. The effort comes none too soon.
According to the Education Department, more than half of high school seniors
lack even a basic knowledge of American history. Nearly 1 in 5, for example,
think Germany was our ally in World War II.

"The problem runs deeper than just an ignorance of facts and figures. The
American Founders argued that self-government requires civic and history
education. Not only must future citizens know that legitimate government is
grounded in the protection of equal natural rights and the consent of the
governed - the principles of the Declaration of Independence - they also
must understand and appreciate how the Constitution and our institutions of
limited government work to protect liberty and the rule of law."

- Columnist Matthew Spalding of the Heritage Foundation
