Liberal Talk-Radio

"Chuck, the liberals have worked very quickly and have successfully launched
their all-liberal, all-the-time radio network. They've decided to call it
'National Public Radio.'"

Congrats to a Good Friend & Conservative

"Kerri Houston, until recently the national field director for the American
Conservative Union, has moved over to Frontiers of Freedom, a conservative
public policy organization, where she becomes the vice president of policy."

- Peter Roff, UPI's Capital Comment, 2/19/03

Common Sense from Across the Pond

"Supposing I came along in August 2001 and said...that there was an al-Qaeda
terrorist network; no one would have heard of it. Suppose I said that we
would have to invade Afghanistan in order to deal with it; no one would have
believed that that was necessary. Yet, my goodness, a few weeks later,
thousands of people were killed on the streets of New York. . . . The threat
(from Iraq) is real, and if we do not deal with it the consequences of our
weakness will haunt future generations."

- British Prime Minister Tony Blair

Peacenik Numbers Proved False

"A survey using sophisticated aerial photography of Sunday's anti-war march
and rally in San Francisco has produced results that indicate a far smaller
crowd than the 200,000 protesters estimated by police and event organizers.
The results of the independent survey, commissioned by The Chronicle and
SFGate.com, cast doubt on traditional counting methods and contradict the
crowd estimate of 200,000, which was reported in this newspaper and news
media around the world."

- San Francisco Chronicle, 2/21/03

Pampered Princes of Perks & Privilege

"Even though we are falling deeper into the dungeon of debt, we can find
comfort in knowing that our U.S. senators will be relaxing in a new,
luxurious health spa equipped with steam rooms and saunas, massage and
sleeping rooms, and top-quality workout equipment. The new spa is open to
U.S. senators only. The cost of this new facility to the taxpayers is a
secret. The full story, as reported by The Hill on February 12, 2003, can
be read at http://www.thehill.com/news/021303/luxury.aspx ."

Guns in Cockpit Coming Soon...Maybe

"A task force of the Transportation Security Administration recommended
yesterday that pilots who want to carry guns undergo extensive psychological
and medical checks and attend five days of classroom and firearms training
before being issued guns," reported the Washington Post on Thursday. "The
panel also suggested that pilots carry their guns in lockboxes through
airports to aircraft, and that they not be authorized to use the weapons
outside cockpits. TSA chief James M. Loy is not likely to make major
changes to the group's recommendations."

Um, hello? What good is a gun carried in a lockbox? If the pilot is
cleared to carry a weapon through "extensive psychological and medical
checks," then why can't he wear the weapon where he could draw it at a
moment's notice if, for example, a terrorist goes on a rampage at the ticket
counter instead of on the plane...as happened, you'll recall, in Los Angeles
last year?

And what's with the restriction on using the weapon outside the cockpit?
This means the pilot can shoot a terrorist if he comes into the cockpit, but
can't shoot the terrorist if he is systematically slicing the throats of
dozens of passengers in the coach? Only in government does something this
stupid make sense.

Advice to Hispanics

"Are you Hispanic, Latino, South American, Spanish, Mexican, Cuban, Puerto
Rican, or from the Bronx? Congratulations! You are now America's second
largest racial minority. Now that you have achieved this wonderful
distinction, a stark choice looms. Should you be a Republican or Democrat?

"For this difficult decision, I have some advice. Find the nearest black
Democrat. A local hack will do, but better yet, a national bigwig like a
Maxine Waters, or maybe Cynthia McKinney would be great. Snag a
high-profiler like NAACP's Julian Bond, filmmaker Spike Lee, or especially
Jesse Jackson, and you'd be all set (although squeezing Brother Jesse's ego
through your front door is a challenge).

"Invite them to sit down at your kitchen table. Ask them to tell you
everything they stand for, everything they believe, and every suggestion
they have to offer. Write it all down. This might take awhile. Be patient.

"When they're done, take that precious piece of paper and frame it over the
mantle. Then, escort these esteemed folks to your front door, line them up,
and boot their butt so hard they literally fly to the curb. Finally,
memorize that precious piece of paper. And for the rest of your life, do
just the opposite."

- Tom Adkins, The Common Conservative," 2/21/03

Another Fed-Ed Failure

"More than a billion dollars a year of federal aid for after-school programs
in 7,500 public schools nationwide has not helped most children
academically, a federally funded study concluded. Children who attend
after-school activities at public elementary and middle schools are more
likely to encounter bullies, vandals, thieves and drug users than those who
do not, said the study, conducted for the U.S. Education Department."

- Washington Times, 2/19/03

Skool Daze

"Public schools are run by the National Educational Association. They are
not run by people you can hold accountable, such as teachers,
superintendents and school boards. The NEA opposes merit pay, charter
schools, and any decision by any school administrator that has not been
determined in advance by collective bargaining. Simply put, the NEA opposes
everything except its own power.

"...Meanwhile, kids aren't learning. The vocabulary of the average American
14-year-old has dropped from 25,000 words to 10,000. San Francisco Examiner
reporter Emily Gurnon asked teenagers to identify the country from which
America won its independence. Among the answers: 'Japan or something, China.
Somewhere out there on the other side of the world.' 'It wouldn't be
Canada, would it?' 'I don't know; I don't even, like, have a clue.' 'I
want to say Korea. I'm tripping.'

"...The problem, says (author Peter) Brimelow, is that the NEA is the
backbone of the Democratic Party and public education is a government
monopoly. . . . If the NEA is to be undone, its undoing will come from
parents and teachers deserting the schools. Homeschoolers, without benefit
of fancy facilities, science labs, and huge expenditures of money, outscore
public school students."

- Columnist Paul Craig Roberts

Cut, Cut, Cut, Cut, Cut

"Washington could cut the 2004 budget deficit in half and fund top national
priorities simply by eliminating the $90 billion spent on corporate welfare,
the $20 billion in pork barrel spending, the $20 billion in payment errors,
and the $17 billion spent each year that Congress cannot even account for.

"Why stop there? Eliminate the obsolete Commerce Department. Devolve the
highway program and gas tax to the states. Reopen and reduce last year's
bloated farm bill. Every dollar spent on those programs means a dollar less
for defense, homeland security or pro-growth tax relief, as well as a higher
budget deficit."

- Brian Riedl of the Heritage Foundation

Tax the Rich, Feed the Poor

"We are so habituated to the progressive income tax that most conservatives,
fiddling at the margins, fail to focus their ire on the basic immorality of
that progressive income tax, and the social damage it has caused. . . . The
problem is the progressive income tax itself, and how it has become a
cornerstone of the punish-the-rich mentality of the Democratic Party.

"...For the left, redistribution became a rod of judgment, separating wolves
from sheep. Those in favor are noble, those opposed 'mean-spirited.' Only by
understanding this does one grasp the vituperation that Tom Daschle, Hillary
Clinton, Ted Kennedy and others heap upon the Bush tax proposals."

- Wall Street Journal columnist Michael Novak

Gray Skies Are Gonna Clear Up

"If you are (California Democrat Gov.) Gray Davis, here's a number you're
hoping no one ever notices: 4.9 million. That's how many votes Davis got in
1998 the first time he ran. When he was an unknown quantity as Governor. In
his re-election bid, after four years in office, against a weak campaign,
Davis got 1.4 million FEWER votes. To know Gray Davis is to know ... you
really wanted someone else to vote for.

"A group of folks in the Golden State - The People's Advocate, Inc - has
begun a serious effort to give Californians another chance to improve their
government: A 'Recall Gray Davis' drive has begun filing papers and doing
those things necessary to have a recall election this fall.

"...This is very dangerous territory for any public official. Gray Davis
will not be running against an opponent he can vilify and knock down with
negative ads. Gray Davis will be running against his worst nightmare: His
own record."

- Rich Galen, Mullings, 2/21/03

Pragmatic LP'er Sees the Light

"Indiana's best known Libertarian, Andy Horning, is jumping ships. Horning
said he is becoming a Republican. Horning got about 2 percent of the vote
as a Libertarian in November against (Democrat incumbent Rep. Julia) Carson
and Republican challenger Brose McVey. It was his fifth run for office; he
also ran for governor in 2000; Indianapolis mayor in 1999; Marion County
recorder in 1998; and state representative in 1996.

"His frustrations in those races is a big reason he is making the switch.
Horning recounted the many voters who have told him over the years that they
wished they could vote for him -- as a Republican. 'They couldn't come to
me (as a Libertarian,) so I'm coming to them,' Horning said.

"And, he said, he isn't changing his beliefs but hopes they will get more
attention as a Republican. 'The fact is there's just a limit to the size of
the audience I can reach with the Libertarian Party,' Horning said. 'I'm
hoping to switch a little microphone for a big megaphone.'"
