Sebelius Hits Nail on the Head

"The campaign against (judicial nominee Miguel) Estrada has nothing whatever
to do with his race. The Democrats hate him because they fear - probably
with good reason - that Estrada is a conservative who will not allow
12-year-old girls to seek abortions without first telling their moms. That
is the reason Democrats oppose him, and the only one.

"We can argue about the merits of an ideologically driven process denying
him his vote on the Senate floor, but we can't argue about whether the
Democrats are racist. When Republicans do that, they undercut everything
they've said for the past two decades on race - that a person's skin color
shouldn't matter, i.e. University of Michigan.

"By making race a reason to support Estrada - and a reason to vote for him
and bash the Democrats for not doing so - Republicans demean themselves and
abandon their principles on the issue. In short, they become just like the
Democrats, who, if the situation were reversed, would probably do the exact
same thing. But that doesn't make it right."

- Columnist Steve Sebelius

Queen of Spades

The Senate passed a ban on partial-birth abortions last week. OK, here's a
shocker for you: Hillary Clinton voted against the ban, along with 28 of
her Democrat colleagues, three liberal Republicans and that turncoat Jim
Jeffords.

Hillary lamented that it was an "inappropriate and unfortunate time for this
debate to be occurring," what with that pesky war going on and the economy
still struggling along.

Um, then what was her excuse when there was no war and the economy was doing
fine during her husband's occupation of the Oval Office? You'll recall that
Bubba twice vetoed partial-birth abortion bans during his term. So exactly
when, in your opinion Madame Hillary, WOULD it be "appropriate and
fortunate" to end this barbaric procedure? Inquiring minds wanna know.

Terrorist Chicks

"It is a cautionary tale during wartime: Tolerance for cheeky celebrities is
getting low indeed. Just ask the Dixie Chicks, who quickly discovered their
timing was off - and that country music fans want to keep the country in
their music.

"The lead singer of the popular girl group ruffled fans' feathers last
Monday when she stopped wailing about menfolk in song long enough to deliver
political commentary on President Bush. 'Just so you know, we're ashamed
the president of the United States is from Texas,' Natalie Maines told a
London audience - which roared its approval.

"Yesterday, Miss Maines issued a public apology to Mr. Bush for being
'disrespectful.' And no wonder. When news of her criticism reached the
United States, country music fans took down their shootin' irons and went to
war. Some immediately called for a boycott of the Dixie Chicks. A few fans
suggested the group change its name to 'Terrorist Chicks.'"

What War Solves

" 'War never solves anything.' So say dozens of callers to C-SPAN and
left-leaning radio programs (yes, there are some). The answer to this
argument, if you can call it an argument, could almost fit on a bumper
sticker: Apart from securing American independence, ending slavery, and
defeating Nazism and communism, war has never solved anything. . . . War
does solve things. But you have to win them."

- Columnist Mona Charen

Coalition of Cowards

"(I)f the United Nations will do nothing about a murderous monster like
Saddam Hussein, the United States should look for other associations and
other ways to create a coalition of nations that will help preserve our
national security and the security of others that wish to pay the price and
bear the burden of freedom.

"...Following the certain liberation and rebuilding of Iraq while the
coalition of cowards is trying to cover its posterior once weapons of mass
destruction are found, the United States should either reduce its role and
contributions to the United Nations or get out entirely."

- Columnist Cal Thomas

Whistlin' Dixie

"Jews are overtaking Southern whites as the most inviting targets for scorn
and calumny. Southerners are often evangelical Christians (a capital crime
in the circles of the elites) who know all the words to 'Amazing Grace' and
have to stifle the urge to stand up and holler when they hear the
blood-stirring strains of 'Dixie.' A lot of them even root for the
Confederates when they watch 'Gone With the Wind' in the wee hours of the
night, with the shades drawn."

Union Boss: Only Appeasers Need Apply

Gerald McEntee, head pooh-bah of the government employees' union and
chairman of the AFL-CIO's political committee, has warned Democrat
candidates who support President Bush on the Iraq liberation and/or tax cuts
shouldn't expect to see the welcome mat from Big Labor in 2004. "We didn't
think it was appropriate what some of the Democratic leadership did in terms
of not just voting for the original (Iraq) resolution (in Congress), but
embracing Bush and his proposal in the Rose Garden after it was done."

So let's be clear here: Big Mac is saying that Big Labor is against a
strong American national defense and national security and will penalize any
Democrat who isn't squishy enough on those issues.

And they wonder why union membership is at its lowest level ever?

McEntee also had particularly harsh words for Sen. Zell Miller, Georgia
Democrat, who has sided with the President on other issues, as well, such as
tax cuts. Miller "shouldn't even be in the Democratic caucus as far as I'm
concerned," he says.

Ah, the party of diversity and tolerance.

Cannon Fodder: Rewarding Illegals

"Texas, California, New York and Utah have legislatively thumbed their noses
at the federal law (Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623) by passing a state law
that grants in-state tuition rates to people living in our country
illegally. This gives a taxpayer benefit to illegal aliens that is denied
to U.S. citizens in the 49 other states. . . . California universities now
make a student from Arizona pay nearly 4 times as much as an illegal alien.

"...Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. Chris Cannon are trying to
repeal the federal law. Their bill is elegantly titled the DREAM Act
(Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors). American taxpayers
should wake up and see how they are being ripped off by the high costs of
tolerating illegal aliens in our midst."

- Phyllis Schlafly of the Eagle Forum

Uncontrolled Litigation

"Our nation is facing a health care crisis driven by uncontrolled
litigation. Doctors are being forced to abandon patients and practices.
Women are being particularly hard hit, as are low income and rural
neighborhoods."

- Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), Associated Press, 3/14/03

Run Mitch, Run

The Associated Press reports that 500 people, including office holders,
party officials and business leaders have sent a letter to White House
Budget Director Mitch Daniels encouraging him to run for governor in Indiana
next year. The conservative Daniels is highly regarded and respected,
although he ruffled a few Capitol Hill feathers and offended a few pooh-bah
sensibilities a while back when he suggested the congressional motto should
be something along the lines of: Don't just stand there, spend something.
Daniels tells AP he will decide whether to enter the race soon.

The Goldwater Doctrine

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
