POWs

The treatment of American POWs by Iraq should come as no surprise to anyone
who knows ANYTHING about how Iraqis have been tortured and killed over the
years by Saddam Hussein's regime. If he'll do it to his own people, why
wouldn't he do it to ours?

Of course, that sure as hell doesn't make it right, but it does call into
question the judgment and motives of the anti-war protesters and Democrats
such as Tom Daschle who so viscerally opposed U.S. military action to take
out Hussein. War IS the answer. It became the ONLY answer.

Speaking of Daschle - the guy who was so "saddened, saddened" by the
administration's supposed inability to come to a diplomatic solution to the
Iraq problem - one has to wonder if he wasn't feeling just a bit "saddened,
saddened" yesterday to discover the reason for failed diplomacy with Russia
wasn't due to the Bush administration, but because Russia was afraid the
world would find out it's been selling banned military material to Hussein's
regime? Don't hold your breath waiting for an apology or even
acknowledgement that he was dead wrong. The guy has no shame or conscience.

One has to question every allied death from this point on with respect to
whether it could have been avoided if the Democrats and the United Nations
hadn't dragged their feet for the last six months (if not six years). Those
were six additional months that Saddam Hussein had available to him to
prepare whatever traps and ambushes he likely has waiting for our troops,
especially once they reach Baghdad.

As for the anti-war protesters who continue to give aid and comfort to the
regime that just executed our POWs, their 15 minutes of fame should be up.
They should be treated with all the disdain and scorn they deserve. They
aren't merely exercising their free speech. They are undermining our troops
in battle. And they are tying up first-responders who might very well be
needed in event of any new terror attacks here at home.

It's time for the media to stop giving them more attention than they
deserve. They are a small, tiny minority of goofballs and wingnuts. If
they get any press at all, it should be in the same proportion.

UN's Slow Death

"The United Nations had a final shot of redemption on the Iraq question and
they didn't take it. I believe we are going to see increasing disengagement
from the U.N. process by the United States. The United Nations is dying a
slow death as a political organization."

- Nile Gardiner of the Heritage Foundation, CNSNews.com, 3/19/03

Who Needs 'Em?

"It's time the United States considers quitting the United Nations. In the
past, only the right-wing fringe argued for pulling out of the U.N., which,
after all, was created in 1945, not only with the United States' blessing,
but largely at our urging. In the nearly 58 years since, the U.N. has had,
at best, a mixed role in preventing and resolving conflict.

"...Nothing about the recent U.N. back-stabbing over Iraq has surprised me.
The real question is why we put up with it. What exactly has the United
Nations accomplished in recent years that we could not have done on our own?
The Gulf War, though sanctioned by the U.N., was almost entirely an American
effort, with the usual help from the Brits and a handful of other nations.

"The U.N. has failed miserably in preventing horrific mass murder in Rwanda,
the Balkans and Cambodia. It has been totally ineffective in promoting peace
in the Middle East, engaging in vicious slurs against Israel while coddling
thugs like Yasser Arafat. It has been unable to prevent terrorism anywhere.

"Meanwhile, the United States is expected to bear a ridiculous share of the
cost of operating the United Nations. . . . Pretending that the United
Nations is worthy of our unqualified support is not in our nation's best
interest."

- Columnist Linda Chavez

How to Punish the French

"...By slightly loosening immigration rules, we could punish France by
allowing more of its talented citizens into America. . . . Several thousand
Frenchmen are on a waiting list to immigrate to the U.S. Still others are
discouraged from applying by the long list, which can take years to clear.

"The U.S. Embassy could quietly let out word that we are passing out green
cards or work permits to a certain number of French computer experts or
civil engineers--or really hit below the belt by targeting French fashion
designers and wine makers. Our high-tech and engineering professions could
absorb 500 French computer specialists and 1,000 civil engineers without
seriously affecting U.S. pay scales, but France could ill afford to lose
them."

About Time

"Nearly 140 new federal agents will be assigned to the U.S.-Mexico border in
Arizona this year to protect against terrorists, a rising flood of illegal
immigrants, and drug and alien smugglers, said border czar Asa Hutchinson."

Who Could Be Against the Pledge?
Democrats.

"The House voted yesterday to condemn a federal appeals court's rulings that
reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools is unconstitutional
because of its reference to God. The nonbinding resolution, passed 400-7
with 15 members voting 'present'."

"...The seven who voted against the resolution were all Democrats: Robert C.
Scott of Virginia, Jim McDermott of Washington, Pete Stark and Michael M.
Honda of California, Jerrold Nadler and Gary L. Ackerman of New York and
Barney Frank of Massachusetts."

An Elephant Never Forgets

Last Wednesday the Senate killed the ANWR bill which would have allowed
environmentally sensitive oil drilling in Alaska. This didn't sit well at
all with the state's senior senator. "In the time I've served here (in the
Senate), many people have made commitments to me," said GOP Sen. Ted Stevens
before the 52-48 vote. "And I have never broken a commitment in my life. I
make this commitment: People who vote against this today are voting against
me, and I will not forget it."

As they say, payback's a...

Cutting the Korean Apron Strings

"Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the United States was considering
withdrawing Army troops from the Demilitarized Zone, and pulling some out of
South Korea altogether.

"The step is long overdue. When the United States intervened after North
Korea invaded South Korea in 1950, we did so because North Korea was part of
an international communist effort to conquer the world, and because South
Korea was too weak to defend herself.

"Russia is no longer communist, and China is communist more in name than in
fact. South Korea today has more than twice the population, and nearly 40
times the national wealth of North Korea. South Korea has the resources to
defend herself by herself, if she has the will to do so."

I Want My Big TV

The next time the teachers union tells you that we're not spending enough
money on education as their excuse for its lousy results, ask them about the
new TV recently installed in the Greenwich (Connecticut) Public Schools'
board room. The 43-inch flat-screen TV goes for about seven grand retail,
but the educators got it for a steal at $4,182.

Union president Joanne Zammit had no problem with the purchase so long as it
was used frequently and didn't just "hang on the wall." While we admit the
TV will be great for watching the Final Four, we wonder how many books that
money could've bought. Inquiring minds wanna know.

Goin' Postal

"They bark like a pack of dogs, quack like a flock of ducks and hiss like a
nest of vipers. They wrap each other from had to toe in toilet paper and
aluminum foil and pipe cleaners. They build sandcastles and gingerbread
houses and practice picking up oranges while blindfolded. These are the
professional auditors and investigators who police the United States Postal
Service.

"The mission of the USPS Office of Inspector General is to make the mail
more efficient and cost-effective by rooting out waste, fraud, abuse and
mismanagement. Yet hundreds of IG staffers have been taking part in bizarre
bonding and team-building exercises and playing goofy games that burn up
millions of dollars - and appear to do little or nothing to curb postal
inefficiencies, a Daily News investigation found.

"'Each time your Aunt Minnie sticks a 37-cent stamp on an envelope, she's
funding an agency that's off track, off message, off mission - and off its
rocker,' said Leslie Paige, vice president of Citizens Against Government
Waste, which tracks the misspending of public funds."
