Action Alert

As a follow-up to yesterday's blurb about Sen. Mark Dayton's proposal to tax
email, rest assured that this is indeed a new and real proposal which is NOT
related to that longtime Internet hoax about "Bill 602P." Also, you can
contact the Minnesota Democrat and tell him exactly what you think about his
idea to tax your emails the way the post office taxes your "snail" mails by
going to: http://dayton.senate.gov/webform.html

Privatizing the Post Office

"As many other countries have already realized, taking away a post office's
monopoly and turning it into a real business is the most effective and
potent option available. Postal liberalization has happened in New Zealand,
where stamp prices went down, and in Australia, where on-time delivery went
up.

"...There is no good reason the U.S. government has to run the post office.
It's not the Army. It's not the police. It's an old-fashioned way of sending
e-mail. And it's barely that anymore. A recent Postal Service study says
personal letters make up just 5.6 percent of our mail. Advertising/junk
mail, however, is almost 60 percent. Does this remind you of your e-mail
inbox?"

- Max Pappas of the Lexington Institute, Jewish World Review, 5/16/03

No, This Is About Stupidity

"This is about religious liberty. It's about whether this country is going
to have religious diversity."

Muslim in Florida who is suing to keep her veil on for her driver's license

Hammering Government Regulations

"Various Republican efforts for regulatory reform since the GOP takeover of
Capitol Hill in 1995 have largely stalled. But (House Majority Leader Tom)
DeLay is now calling for a complete overhaul of the way standards are set. .
. . (In a speech last week, Delay) said Congress should write - or at least
approve - all government regulations. 'Congress is the branch of government
most responsive and accountable to the people,' DeLay said, 'so it's
Congress who should be making - or at least approving - these rules. . The
regulatory state simply cannot be trusted to hold itself accountable. It has
no voters, no constituents, no one to answer to.'"

- The Hill, 5/28/03

GOP Winning War of Ideas

"The Republicans have convinced a majority of the public that their central
domestic policy (low taxes, free markets, self-reliance and traditional
values), and their central foreign policy (security through military
strength and aggressive strategy and tactics) is right for the times. The
Democratic Party - in its collective heart and mind - opposes such programs
and values, but can't find plausible alternative strategies."

- Columnist Tony Blankley

Hoping for the Worst

"It should be crystal clear by now that Democrats are basing their entire
campaign for winning back the White House on two hopes: (1) That the economy
stays in the doldrums. (2) That the war on terrorism goes badly. In either
case, the result would not be good for the American people."

- Columnist Richard Benedetto, USAToday.com

Glass of Pessimism

"(T)he Democrats' glass is not half full, but half empty, and it appears to
be leaking."

Ghost Buster

"Hillary Clinton relied on three ghostwriters for her forthcoming
autobiography, according to the Drudge Report. . . . Is it really an 'auto
'-biography if it's written by a carload of ghosts?"

- James Taranto, Best of the Web, 5/27/03

It's All About Me, Me, Me

"I was particularly well-suited to serve when I did because I have a higher
pain threshold than most people. Because of my upbringing, I had a
particular tolerance for it that made it easier for me to survive.''

- Former impeached President Bill Clinton in a discussion with historian
Michael Beschloss on Wednesday, Associated Press, 5/28/03 (Is this guy
pathetic, or what?)

Re-Writing History

"Clinton spinmeister Sidney Blumenthal inhabits a parallel universe,
connected by various halls of mirrors to what most of us consider the real
world. So if you're tempted to read 'The Clinton Wars,' his account of the
scandals and triumphs of the last presidency, it's wise to bring along a
guide to what actually happened."

- Wall Street Journal columnist Robert L. Bartley, 5/28/03

Donahue Craps Out Again

Uber-liberal talk show host Phil Donahue can't even hold a captured audience
any longer. Despite being unceremoniously dumped by MSNBC recently, the
Philster nonetheless was invited to give the graduation address to students
at North Carolina State University on May 17th. Donahue delivered his usual
left-wing pabulum to the crowd, many of whom responded by either heckling
the liberal dinosaur or simply walking out. Adding insult to injury, the
school's chancellor found it appropriate to criticize the speech afterward.
It ain't easy being a left-wing kook in America anymore.

Moore's Millions

"After all the awards that cinema charlatan Michael Moore has piled up, he's
now raking in the commodity that he's been vilifying in all of his works -
money. 'Bowling for Columbine' has taken in more that $50 million dollars,
making it the highest-grossing fake documentary in history."

Yer Publik Skools at Werk

readers, let alone scholars."

Keep the Money Home

"The dustup between U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave and Transportation Committee
Chairman Don Young on the House floor last week provides more evidence that
it's time for the feds to get out of the highway business. The states
should be allowed to keep and spend the 18.4-cent-a-gallon federal levy.
Otherwise, billions in highway funds could be held hostage to Washington's
political passions.

".Washington keeps it because Congress loves not only to skim a large amount
off the top but to use the proceeds as a whip to coerce the states into
passing laws it likes. Pass a .08 drunk driving standard, build car-pool
lanes, create emissions inspections programs - or forfeit your funds."

- Rocky Mountain News editorial, 5/27/03

Take Two Depositions and Call Me in the Morning

"The American medical system may be the world's best, but don't let that get
you down. Our trial lawyers have the answer. They plan on suing the
blankety-blank out of the pharmaceutical companies, relieving them of
billions of dollars and forcing them, if all goes well, to concentrate on
flavored aspirins and fingernail clippers."

- Columnist William Murchison
