Aaaaccckkkk!

".(T)here is considerable evidence from recent opinion polls that the
American public these days regard the Clintons as mostly a hairball it would
like to get over."

Give UN to Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys

"I dug my old 'get the U.S. out of the U.N.' bumper strips out of a box in
the garage some time ago and I'm ready to put one on my car. This is an
organization that should meet in Paris, where its friends reside and where
the heads of member states not welcome here can go to sip chardonnay with
Chirac while their people starve."

- Dave Keene, president of the American Conservative Union

Missed Him By THAT Much

"Sad news from Gaza City, where Hamas honcho Abdel Aziz Rantisi is still
alive and two bystanders are dead in a failed Israeli helicopter strike. The
White House, bizarrely, is criticizing Israel. . . . Israel should ignore
what Bush says and do what he does. The U.S. has 'assassinated' numerous
terrorist leaders since Sept. 11, and Israel has as much right to defend
itself as America does. One further bit of advice for the Israelis: Next
time, make sure you actually kill the guy."

Phonics Works; Go Figure

"A study (by the National Institute for Early Education Research and Rutgers
University) confirmed the premise of the Bush administration's 'Reading
First' initiative that systematic phonics instruction is essential in
teaching young children of all backgrounds to read successfully."

Welfare Reform Works; Go Figure

"Children whose parents entered an experimental welfare-to-work program in
Milwaukee during the 1990s improved socially and academically, say authors
of a study (by the Manpower Demonstration Research Corp.)."

Limiting Gov't, Not the People

"May I chime in on flag burning, Chuck? Yes, it nauseates me when some puke
burns Old Glory. But a constitutional amendment? That is not the vehicle.
We must not forget that the Constitution of the United States is intended to
limit the powers of government, not of her people."

Gov't-Approved Breathing Next?

"Please let me join some of the other vets in expressing my opposition to a
flag burning amendment. I enlisted in the Navy in 1970 when many others
were going to Canada or seeking other ways to avoid military service. Our
ex-philander in chief comes to mind. I served four years active duty and
some reserve time to protect the right to free speech, among others. While
I personally find the abuse of our flag a distasteful way to express
frustration with our government's policies or actions, I believe everyone
has a right to that type of expression. Once we've outlawed everything that
offends anyone, we won't even be able to breath without government
 approval."

Specter's "Conservative" Record

"(A) May 3 Wall Street Journal op-ed noted: 'No matter how (Sen. Arlen
Specter) self-identifies, the senator has voted for five major tax
increases, and his spending habits rank him second-worst among GOP senators,
according to Citizens Against Government Waste.'

"The Journal op-ed also pointed out that Specter voted against former
President Ronald Reagan more than any other Republican senator in 1986 and
1987, 'yet managed to vote with President Clinton a majority of the time in
six of his eight years in the Oval Office. As a member of the Judiciary
Committee in 1987, Mr. Specter played a key role in defeating Supreme Court
nominee Robert Bork,' the Journal op-ed stated. 'In October 1999, he voted
with the Democrats on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. And he couldn't
bring himself to take a stand on Mr. Clinton's impeachment."

Gettin' Pretty Hot in ACU's Kitchen

"More than 30 conservative members of the U.S. House of Representatives are
angered that the head of one of America's foremost conservative groups has
endorsed the 2004 re-election bid of Pennsylvania Republican Senator Arlen
Specter.

"American Conservative Union (ACU) Chairman David Keene is drawing fire for
backing Specter, who has a lifetime rating from the ACU of 47 percent, over
Rep. Pat Toomey, who has a lifetime ACU rating of 97 percent. Toomey is
challenging Specter for the 2004 Republican nomination.

"...The (endorsement) prompted a May 22 letter from the 33 House Republicans
to the ACU's board of directors expressing 'dismay' over Keene's support for
Specter, whom the congressmen described as 'liberal.'

"'Mr. Keene's action has brought discredit and embarrassment to your fine
organization,' the letter stated. The GOP House members signing the letter
have received ACU lifetime ratings (given by the ACU based on lawmakers'
voting record in accordance with the organization's policy positions)
ranging from 84 to 100 percent. 'We are proud of the high ratings we've
received from your organization. Unfortunately, Mr. Keene's action makes a
complete mockery of those very ratings,' the letter from the congressmen
alleged."

A Chris Cannon Clone

"U.S. Rep. John Sullivan's former campaign consultant on Monday accused the
Oklahoma Republican of filing false campaign reports to hide debts and
mislead the Federal Election Commission and the public about the campaign's
financial status. Dave Pearson of Arvada, Colo., laid out that accusation
in an official complaint he says he filed with the FEC.

"Pearson, who named Sullivan personally in the complaint, also claims that
Sullivan's campaign still owes his consulting firm more than $15,000 from
his first run for Congress in late 2001. 'He certainly knew that the debt
existed,' he said in a telephone interview. 'I warned them about violating
federal law.'"

- Jim Meyers, Tulsa World, 6/10/03 (What is it with Republican congressmen
who stiff the people they hire once the election is over?)
