The Looting That Never Was

"It took only 48 hours for the museum to be destroyed, with at least 170,000
artifacts carried away by looters." - New York Times, April 13

"You'd have to go back centuries, to the Mongol invasion of Baghdad in 1258,
to find looting on this scale." - British archaeologist Eleanor Robson, New
York Times, April 16

"Well, not really. Turns out the Iraqi national Museum lost not 170,000
treasures, but 33 major pieces of art. Baghdad Bob was more accurate." -
Columnist Charles Krauthammer, June 16

With Liberty and Justice for Some

"How can there possibly be liberty and justice for all, when, in the name of
justice, people claim rights to income, food, housing, education, health
care, transportation, ad infinitum? We can't. Positive rights to receive
such things, absent an obligation to earn them, must violate others'
liberty, by taking some of their income without their consent. They are
really just wishes, convertible into benefits for some only by employing the
government to violate others' rights not to have what is theirs taken."

- Prof. Gary Galles of Pepperdine University

The End of the World As We Know It

"Mr. Muth, most God-fearing Christians are not hysterical over same-sex
marriage; we just don't want to see another Sodom & Gomorrah or Flood
brought on by homosexuality, fornication, pedophilia, incest, pornography
and bestiality. America is ten-fold worse than all previous evils, its just
a matter of time 'til God destroys this moral sewer."

- News & Views reader Jack Territo of Buffalo, NY

Total Recall

"A quarter century after Californians passed Proposition 13 and ignited a
nationwide tax revolt, voters here may be getting ready to make history
again. It looks as if an effort to recall Gov. Gray Davis will collect the
900,000 voter signatures to make the ballot . That would set up a political
free-for-all at the same time the state is struggling with a $38 billion
deficit. The mix of candidates to replace Mr. Davis may include both fellow
Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger."

- John Fund's Political Diary, 6/12/03

CA Guv Promises to Kick Ass

"Earlier this week, (Democrat California Gov. Gray) Davis called Los Angeles
Times political columnist George Skelton to dismiss this latest attempt (a
citizen-led recall effort) to cut short his career. 'They can take a shot,'
Davis is quoted as saying in Skelton's column. 'Then they'll get their ass
kicked. Folks have been underestimating me for a long time. Don't worry
about it, man. I've won five elections in this state. And I'm not going to
lose one.'''

- The Mercury News, 6/13/03

Profiling Rats

"The Centers for Disease Control has put out an advisory on a monkeypox
scare has hit several states. Among the advice for avoiding the disease,
also known as febrile rash illness: 'Avoid contact with any prairie dogs or
Gambian giant rats that appear to be ill.'

"Why is the CDC singling out rats from Gambia, an African country? Is there
any evidence that European and North American rats are any less dangerous?
Isn't it a good idea to avoid sick rats altogether, regardless of their race
or national origin?"

- James Taranto, Best of the Web, 6/12/03

The Road to Tyranny

"The vague idea that burning a flag is disrespectful or personally offensive
is not sufficient to show the imminent threat of personal injury. That is
why it is so alarming when our legislators seek to punish a particular form
of expression on the imprecise ground that they consider it offensive.
Punishing what they consider offensive transforms our law into an instrument
of tyranny.

"...Moreover, legislating symbols of expression will lead this country down
a slippery slope. . . . Once we allow the government to punish flag burning,
it can use that power to dictate how we treat other forms of personal
property - our cars, our offices, our homes."

- Columnist Armstrong Williams

Igniting a Firestorm

To refresh everyone's memory, the following is what News & Views reader
James Hartley wrote to us a few days ago about veterans who do not support a
Constitutional amendment banning flag-burning...along with just a sampling
of many responses from a few such "so-called" veterans.

"Enough of these so called 'veterans' in your newsletter saying that it is
alright to burn the flag. I call them traitors, they are either traitors or
just plain ignorant. Burning the flag is a declaration of war. Only the
enemies of the republic would do it. Those that hate the republic so much
that they burn our flag deserve jail time. Or better yet the lash or
 stocks."

*****************************************
Hartley's Claptrap

"After reading Mr. Hartley's claptrap, I just have to respond. In all the
letters from vets that I read in your column, not one said it was alright to
burn our flag, just that individuals have the right/freedom to do so. I
don't know one vet who would hesitate to take an axe handle to a flag burner
caught in the act. But a constitutional amendment dealing with it? Just
absurd."

- News & Views reader Gary T. Palka, CWO3, USN (Ret)

A REAL Veteran

"Add me to the list of veterans against the flag desecration amendment. That
does not mean that I think flag burning is 'alright.' It means I want to
live in a free country. And I ain't a 'so-called' veteran, I am a real
veteran."

- News & Views reader Rob Booth of Houston, Texas (US Navy 1990-1998)

Idiot's Rights

"You may add my name to those who get so emotionally upset when I see or
hear about our flag being desecrated that I am tempted to crack the
desecrator's head, but who still supports the idiot's rights. That is why
we served, to support freedom. The Constitution guarantees their right to
be idiots."

- News & Views reader Tann Lightsey of Smyrna, GA 30080 (USAF 1954 - 1978,
Vietnam 1972-1973)

Sense of Proportion

"Include me amongst those U.S. Veterans who say let them burn the flag.
Rights are precious and they are preserved in common times and uncommon
times by letting dumb people do dumb things. Burning a flag is a first
amendment expression of an opinion. Blowing up a building is a crime. We
need to have a sense of proportion."

- News & Views reader C. R. Krieger, Colonel, USAF (ret)

Defending Real Freedom

"I served in the military to defend real freedom, not symbols. If
demonstrators want to show that they hate America and freedom, by all means
let them burn their flag. Then everyone watching them will see what kind of
people they are, and no freedom loving Americans will want to be identified
with them. Prosecuting them for burning the flag will just give them the
attention they seek and political prisoner status in the eyes of their
fellow protesters."

- News & Views reader David Schimmel
