HillaryCare Sneaks In Back Door

"Senator Hillary Clinton is smiling -- thanks to Republicans. The
Republican-led Congress did to America what Hillary Clinton tried to do to
us ten years ago...and Hillary couldn't be happier. Welcome to Hillary
Care!

"The House and Senate each recently passed their own version of a Medicare
prescription drug bill and will soon vote on a final version which then will
be sent to President Bush to sign. When President Bush signs the bill, the
Republicans will have successfully forced upon us a straight-jacket of
socialized medicine that even Harry Houdini could not escape."

- The Liberty Committee, 6/29/03

Pig In a Poke on Drugs

"It distresses us to see people in the administration say this (prescription
drug bill) is a good thing. This is a pig in a poke."

- Ed Feulner, president, Heritage Foundation, Washington Times, 6/29/03

Not All "Diversity" Is Created Equal

"(The Supreme Court) has dignified 'diversity' - a flag of activist
convenience, a wily obfuscation - as a compelling state interest, and on its
promoters' terms. 'Diversity' doesn't extend to, say, some dirt-poor
fundamentalist white trash. Her presence wouldn't 'enrich' anyone.
'Diversity' means 'more blacks.' That's why traditional African-American
colleges are exempt from its strictures: as 100 percent black schools,
they're already as diverse as you can get."

- Columnist Mark Steyn

Driving Miss Sandi

"Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's majority decision upholding affirmative
action in admissions to the University of Michigan Law School was her
classic split-the-baby formula, washed down with rambling rhetoric, and
making a mockery of the law. This decision provoked not only dissent from
four other justices, but sarcasm and disgust - as it should have."

- Columnist Thomas Sowell

Separating Church and SCOTUS

"It is not the duty of the (Supreme) court to define and solve the religious
issues of the day. It is the court's responsibility to deal with issues of
constitutionality and not to serve as the nation's moral compass."

- Rev. C. Welton Gaddy, president of the Interfaith Alliance, Washington
Times, 6/29/03

Tale of Two Congressmen

You'll recall from last week the story about how Democrat Sen. Tom Harkin
saw a long line at the airport checkpoint, didn't want to be bothered, and
used his "pull" to bypass the inconvenience, leaving the great unwashed
eating his dust as he buzzed on by.

Contrast that with Rep. Bob Beauprez of Colorado, who has seen similar long
lines at Denver's airport and felt air travelers' pain. The Rocky Mountain
News reports that the freshman Republican exhibited some leadership rather
than ambivalence on this huge problem by calling last week for "a summit
meeting to solve the problem of growing security lines at Denver
International Airport."

Democrat Harkin: "Let them eat cake."

Republican Beauprez: "Let them fix the darned problem."

You decide.

TSA's "Baghdad Bob"

With all due respect, Admiral James Loy, chief administrator of the
new-and-improved government-run Transportation Security Administration
(TSA) - those wonderful folks who provide air travelers with mile-long lines
and strip searches - is losing all credibility through his public
pronouncements about his agency.

In a letter-to-the-editor published by the Washington Times on Friday, Loy
writes, "We have all learned that ensuring security can be inconvenient at
times. Fortunately, as a recent national poll showed, air travelers solidly
support TSA's efforts to protect them."

Yeah, and there are no American troops in Baghdad, right?

Who needs "Baghdad Bob" when you have Jim Loy? Inconvenient "at times"?
Well, yeah...if by the words "at times" you mean ANY time you try to fly ANY
where for ANY reason. And if Loy actually thinks air travelers support TSA'
s efforts - which result in "Thousands Standing Around" and pat-downs of
gray-haired grannies, veterans in wheelchairs and "binky"-sucking tots - I'
ve got some oceanfront property in Nevada for sale.

Now might be a good time to remind everyone again of a little Founding
Father wisdom, courtesy of Ben Franklin: "They that can give up essential
liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor
safety."

Goin' Postal

"The Postal Service spends an estimated $6 million a year for the
sponsorship (of cyclist Lance Armstrong). . . . Critics say the federally
regulated Postal Service, financially troubled for years, should not be
spending money marketing a cycling team.

"'What is the purpose of developing the U.S. Postal Service as a brand? They
don't need a brand,' says Rick Merritt, executive director of PostalWatch, a
Virginia Beach watchdog group. 'It's not a benefit for the American people,
who are paying the bill.' The Postal Service raised the price of a
first-class stamp to 37 cents in June 2002, the fifth increase since 1991,
when the rate increased from 25 cents to 29 cents.

"The struggling agency reported a net loss of $676 million for the fiscal
year ended Sept. 30 and a net loss of nearly $1.7 billion for the prior
year. 'I'm opposed to the Postal Service wasting money to sponsor the team,
' Mr. Merritt says. 'Why should we be paying so [the Postal Service] can
have a better image?'"

- Washington Times, 6/29/03

Political Arson

"It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless
minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds."

- Founding Father Samuel Adams

BRUSHFIRE ALERT: Highway Robbery

There's an effort in Congress to not only raise the existing federal gas tax
on a gallon of gasoline, but to put future gas tax hikes on cruise
control...automatically raising the tax with the rate of inflation. You
know, sort of like those congressional pay raises our "representatives" no
longer have to vote for.

Needless to say, we think this is one of the worst ideas to come down the
pike since HillaryCare. But just to remind some of the liberal "spies"
signed up for News & Views, here are four reasons to oppose federal funding
of roads, bridges and highways:

1.) Giving highway funding power to congressional representatives
encourages them to "buy votes" at taxpayer expense...giving a whole new
meaning to the term "highway robbery."

2.) Giving Congress control of the purse strings means highway funds come
with strings attached, such as mandatory 55 mph speed limits.

3.) Federal regulations - such as the Davis/Bacon Act - substantially
increase construction costs.

4.) Massive cross-subsidies which, for example, take money from a Kansas
farmer to pay to relieve traffic congestion in Washington, D.C.

Republican Transportation Committee Chairman Don Young is pushing for the
federal gas tax hikes to be put on automatic pilot. Republican freshman
Rep. Marilyn Musgrave is pushing back, leading the charge against the
"Highway Robbery Tax."

Young (or more likely some junior staffer or intern) can be reached at 202-
225-5765 if you wish to voice opposition to his tax hike.

Musgrave's office number is 202-225-4676 in case you wish to give some words
of encouragement...and boy, does she need them! It ain't easy or pleasant
to be a freshman taking on the head of a pork-barrel committee like
Transportation.

By the way, this week Citizen Outreach bestowed our "Profiles in
Conservative Courage Award" to Rep. Musgrave, along with her Colorado
colleague Rep. Tom Tancredo.
