>From a Grateful Nation

We included a blurb from the London Sunday Telegraph yesterday which
described the frustration that Norman and Arlene Walters are experiencing
over the death of their son, Donald, in Iraq. "It was, fellow soldiers have
told (Mrs. Walters), Sgt. Donald Walters who performed many of the heroics
attributed to Pfc. (Jessica) Lynch by early news reports," said the
Telegraph, "and Sgt. Walters who was killed after mounting a lone stand
against the Iraqis who ambushed their convoy of maintenance vehicles near
Nasiriyah."

I spoke with Mrs. Walters yesterday afternoon. She explained that she has
no hard feelings toward Jessica Lynch, but wants the truth about her own son
's heroic actions and death in the incident to be properly recognized.
Seems the military is stonewalling the Walters family, if not covering up
the details. Lots of questions; few answers.

In the meantime, if anyone would like to send a card, note or letter of
support and gratitude to Don Walters' parents, you may write them at:

Touchy, Touchy

Seems our whacked-out friends on the left over at MoveOn.org and the
Democratic Underground aren't too happy with Citizen Outreach joining the
battlefield...as you will have noticed reading some of the angry (if not
unintelligible) posts on DU's website. Plus our web host informs us there
were six separate attempts to "hack" our new site Monday night after our
press release hit their wires. As "Agitator," our "Always Right" producer
notes, you know you are over the target when you start catching flak.
Well...bombs away!

English As a Second Language

"Dear Chuck: The postings on The Democratic Underground clearly demonstrate
a need for a Democratic remedial re-education program. It was difficult to
decipher some of the rants because of the poor grammar, punctuation, and
general abuse of the English language. The vulgarities helped define the
intent of the postings which were critical of your honest presentation of
current events. English as a second language may be a course we could offer
to Democrats."

This Ain't Your Grand-Daddy's Post Office

"Like the mythic postmen of yore who were delayed by 'neither rain, nor
sleet, nor snow nor gloom of night,' Lance Armstrong couldn't be stopped
from winning the Tour de France. On Sunday, he crossed the finish line first
for his fifth straight victory. But while Lance may embody the spirit
attributed to yesteryear's couriers, his competitive nature clashes sharply
with that of his bloated, bureaucratic sponsor - the U.S. Postal Service."

Dispatches from the Front

"Christopher Hitchens, a decidedly non-credulous international journalist,
told Fox News, 'It's quite extraordinary to see the way American soldiers
are welcomed. To see the work that they're doing - and not just rolling up
these filthy networks of Ba'athists and jihadists - but building schools,
opening soccer stadiums, helping connect to the Internet, there is a really
intelligent political program as well as a very tough military one.' Because
the daily lives of Iraqis are improving and political stability is
increasing, Wall Street Journal editor Paul Gigot reports from Najaf that,
'The majority aren't worried we'll stay too long; they're petrified we'll
leave too soon.'"

Body Counts

"For those 'chicken littles' who are screeching and whining about our losses
in Iraq, here are the facts. When we failed to act in time, and had to fight
for our very lives:

World War I: 116,516 dead;
World War II: 405,399 dead;
Korean War: 36,516 dead
Vietnam War: 58,152 dead

When we acted in time to stop a dictator before he destroyed us:

Gulf War: 293 dead
Iraq War: 200 dead"

French Arrogance or Ignorance?

"The Associated Press reports that 'the number of American tourists
visiting France has dropped dramatically this year, by as much as 80 percent
in the first half of 2003.' The reason? France's Tourism Ministry attributes
the decline 'mainly to the weak dollar.' Yeah, that must be it."

Put Your Quagmire On My Shoulders

"Timing is everything. Last Tuesday - that would be Qusay and Uday
Tuesday - Dick Gephardt made a speech in San Francisco and gave us the
benefit of his take on President Bush's war: 'If you ask me, if he really
wanted to show us the state of affairs in Iraq, he should have landed on a
patch of quicksand. . . . This looming quagmire is on our shoulders alone.'

"...Technically speaking, can a quagmire be on your shoulders? Isn't it
usually at your feet, so you can sink into it? And, if the quagmire really
appears to be looming at your shoulders, might that not be because you're
looking at the world upside down?"

The Amazing, Shrinking Democrat Party

"A top Democratic pollster warned yesterday that the party is losing ground
among middle class voters and that the erosion will worsen if Democrats
nominate a liberal, antiwar presidential candidate in 2004. . . . The
Democratic Party 'is hurt by current perceptions that Democrats stand for
big government, want to raise taxes too high, are too liberal, and are
beholden to special interest groups,' (Mark) Penn said, detailing the
results of his poll commissioned by the DLC (Democrat Leadership Council).

"'Half a century ago, a near majority of voters identified themselves as a
part of the Democratic Party. Today that number has declined to roughly
one-third of all voters,' he said. Republicans held especially strong leads
among white male voters, as well as married men and women with children.
'Democrats only lead among the lowest income category, voters who earn less
than $20,000 per year,' he said."

The Diversity Police

"It's more than a little ironic," says Ward Connerly of the American Civil
Rights Coalition, "that the very week of our press conference in Michigan
announcing plans to petition to prohibit racial preferences there that the
state's professional football team would be penalized by the league for
hiring a new coach without sufficiently bowing and scraping for the
'diversity' police."

Mr. Connerly, the civil rights activist who has already organized successful
efforts to legally bar racial preferences in public employment, contracting
and education in both California and Washington state, was referring to the
$200,000 fine given Detroit Lions President Matt Millen for failing to meet
the NFL diversity committee's guidelines when he recently hired head coach
Steve Mariucci.

"I haven't seen the Lions team roster," Mr. Connerly added, "but I would
hazard to guess that minority players are actually OVER-represented there. I
wonder," he concluded, "if the 'Diversity Police' are insisting on a program
to actively recruit more white players."

NASCAR Gives Extortion Payments Red Light

"The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing has cut off all funding
for Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, USA Today reported. According to
the newspaper, 'A person familiar with NASCAR's internal decisions confirmed
that the racing organization has not paid Jackson's group any money in 2003
and doesn't plan to.' USA Today reported that NASCAR has given a total of
$250,000 to the Rainbow/PUSH sports division, generating criticism from
conservative groups and racing fans, who see the money as appeasement."
