AND THE OSCAR GOES TO...WHO CARES?

Academy Awards. Didn't watch. Don't care. As I write this particular note I have
no idea what movie won, or what actors got to gush and thank everyone from their third
grade teacher to their gynecologist for all of their success in life. Bread and
circuses. It's clear why politicians -- especially of the leftist variety -- love
Hollywood. The more attention we pay to what goes on in Hollywood, the less attention
we pay to what these politicians are trying to do to us in Washington. To those of
you who didn't tune in to simply another in an seemingly endless succession of
mindless awards shows ... congratulations.

- Talk-show host Neal Boortz

FOUNDING WISDOM FROM THE ORIGINAL KING OF BEERS

The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States
who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.

- Samuel Adams

SELL-OUT GETS JUST DESSERTS

(Smith & Wesson) cut a deal with the Clinton administration in 2000 and agreed to
require background checks at gun shows and install safety locks on all new guns. S&W's
peace powwow with the Clintonites was supposed to be a political triumph and bring
security to the gun industry. S&W would go forth and proselytize for the idea that
Dems were a party gun owners could do business with after all. It didn't turn out that
way. S&W became mud in the eyes of gun customers, sales plummeted 40% and the company
was effectively taken over on the cheap by Saf-T-Hammer, a firm that makes trigger
locks. Adding insult to injury last week, the new chairman installed by Saf-T-Hammer
was himself forced to resign after it was revealed that, 30 years earlier, he had done
time for a string of armed robberies.

- Political Diary, 3/1/04

AUTHORS WHO ARENT WRITERS

The majority of books published nowadays arent by writers, per se, but
celebrities: Hollywood stars, television talk-show hosts, political pundits,
ex-presidents...sports figures...and politicians lately retired or disgraced, or the
young and ambitious ones about to embark upon their dismal careers.

- Bill Croke, American Spectator Online

THIS IZ MY HOWZ

Despite mounting public criticism, (New York) state education officials refuse to
remove from the school system a book titled This Is My House, which depicts typical
Americans as homeless people living in cars. This is where I live right now. My
family is staying in our car, reads the text by author Arthur Dorros. We will move
into a house when we can.

The accompanying drawing shows a scowling white mother and two children sitting in a
car parked in a dilapidated urban neighborhood of graffiti-covered houses with
boarded-up windows. An empty lot is strewn with trash and a discarded tire. . . .
Below the caption of the title illustration is an apparent ebonic spelling of the
phrase reading: This Iz My Hows. Ebonics is a black vernacular advocated by some
educators.

- Washington Times, 3/1/04

GOIN POSTAL

...I was delighted to see that Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) anticipates
investigating the postal service. The first thing, in my opinion, is to find out
exactly how much has been spent in the many sponsorships of Tour de France and Lance
Armstrong. The MILLIONS of dollars will shock everyone. Also, the USPS sponsorship
of the 1996 Olympic Games was outrageous...and at what cost? Every postal increase is
apparently supporting these unauthorized sponsorships. The advertising budget for
slick page magazine ads is totally unnecessary since we have no other alternative.
Who would pay their utility bill using FEDX?

- J. R. Evanger, Denver, CO

GIVE UP THE CELLPHONE? OH, THE HUMANITY!

The Washington Legislature is considering whether poor families can afford $5 a
month in Medicaid premiums for their kids, the Associated Press reports from Olympia.
Democrats say premiums will force families to drop out of Medicaid. They argue the
state should take responsibility for making sure poor kids get health care. The
paper quotes Annette Hensley, a 43-year-old mother of a 14-year-old Medicaid
beneficiary: It would put a big strain on us. Something would have to go. I don't
have cable, so probably the Internet. Maybe my cellphone. And don't poor people have
a right to cellphones?

- James Taranto, Best of the Web, 3/1/04

GOLD-DIGGER COULD TRY NEW MINE

Mr. Kerry was a blueblood of relatively minor means who married a woman worth $300
million and then traded up to a woman worth $500 million. If I were Teresa Heinz Kerry
I would be worried, now Massachusetts is introducing gay marriage, that hubby may
start giving the come-hither look to some of the state's elderly bachelor
billionaires.

- Columnist Mark Steyn

MAYBE HE NEEDS TO GO SEE THE WIZARD OF OZ

(John Kerry) is increasingly being described as a flip-flopper or a waffler or
two-faced. But the real problem with Kerry is something more fundamental. As the
Times rightly notes, he lacks political courage. Perhaps that is why he and his
campaign talk about it so much. . . . At the age of 25, John Kerry's courage was
indisputable. Now, at age 60, it is more or less undetectable.

- Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby

AL GORE WITHOUT THE CHARM

The other day, President Bush went to Florida for NASCAR's Daytona 500. His likely
Democratic rival, John Kerry, did not approve. We don't need, he declared, in the
portentous drone he's been perfecting for three decades, a president who says,
'Gentlemen, start your engines.' We need a president who says, 'America, let's start
our economy.'

Hmm. If this is the best material Mr. Kerry's high-price consultants can provide,
it's going to be a long, long while from here to November. It's unlikely that any but
the most partisan Democrats can stomach nine months of a candidate who's Al Gore
without the personal charm and affable public-speaking style.

- Columnist Mark Steyn

KERRY: NOT MUCH BESIDES NAM

I would argue that Kerry keeps Vietnam at the forefront of his campaign because it is
just about all he's got ... . Kerry thinks his brief tour in Vietnam qualifies him to
be president and commander in chief. But commanding a riverboat and leading a country
are different. . . . I'll bet Republicans would be more uneasy with John Edwards as
the Democratic nominee than they are about John Kerry who, without Vietnam, is not
much."

- Toronto Sun columnist Peter Worthington

THE EDWARDS ALTERNATIVE

...John Edwards had a dirt poor, hardscrabble childhood but managed to sue his way
out of poverty. He's made $25 million just from suing tobacco companies. . . . For
single-issue guys like me, Mr. Edwards barely says a word on Iraq and the war, though
I'm inclined to think he'd be better than Mr. Kerry. The latter seems eager to do
whatever French President Jacques Chirac and the United Nations want, whereas with Mr.
Edwards there's always the possibility he'll wind up suing the Security Council for
emotional distress. . . . It's true that in his five years in Washington Mr. Edwards
hasn't accomplished anything, but then neither has Mr. Kerry and he's been there four
times as long.

- Columnist Mark Steyn

VYING FOR KERRYS #2

(Virginia) Gov. Mark Warner has already pulled off the impressive feat of being
elected as a Democrat in a state that has voted Republican for president in every
election since 1964. Now he is trying to convince this conservative state to raise $1
billion in taxes to plug a budget deficit. If he succeeds in breaking the lock
Republicans have created against higher taxes, expect him to leap to the front ranks
of those John Kerry is considering as his running mate.

- Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund
