SEX AND TAXES

We at the Spectator think of tax cuts, in fact, a bit like we think of sex. When
they are good, they are very, very good. And when they are bad, they are still pretty
good.

- Alfred Regnery, American Spectator, March 2004

FOUNDING WISDOM

Religion and government will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed
together.

- Founding Father James Madison

WERE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE, TOTO

One of the biggest fallacies of the federal Marriage Amendment (FMA) argument is that
a constitutional amendment is the only way to stop the federal courts from imposing
the potential gay marriages of one state on all the other states. Au contraire. Much
like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, Congress has - and always has had -the power to stop
a national imposition of gay marriage by the federal judiciary...and they don't need
no magical ruby slippers to do it.

IMMIGRATION RIM SHOTS

Mexico's President Vicente Fox...obtained the same rights for Mexican tourists in the
U.S. that Canadians enjoy. It's about time. Americans are sick and tired of the
Canadians coming down to this country and taking jobs away from our Mexicans.

- Comedian Argus Hamilton

LATEST FROM THE LAND OF FRUITS & NUTS

A Democratic state senator from California has introduced an amendment to the state
constitution that would allow minors to participate in elections. John Vasconcellos's
proposal, the Associated Press reports, would give 16-year-olds a half vote and
14-year-old a quarter vote in state elections beginning in 2006. Vasconcellos's
amendment is unlikely to pass, since it requires two-thirds approval of the California
Legislature and a vote of the people. Republicans don't like the idea; one,
Assemblyman Ray Haynes, calls it the nuttiest idea I've ever heard.

- James Taranto, Best of the Web, 3/10/04

MOVE OVER LENO

Mock question posed to Vice President Dick Cheney at the annual Gridiron Dinner last
Saturday: Has Senator Kerry had Botox treatments?"

Cheneys Answer: "I have some guidance on that from Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul
Wolfowitz: 'We have dispatched Dr. David Kay . . . to search for the bio-warfare
agents we believe hidden in Senator Kerry's forehead. If Senator Kerry has used botox
as part of a wrinkle enrichment program, he is in violation of U.N. Resolution 752.
Upon receiving Dr. Kay's report, the weapons of mass destruction that Senator Kerry so
adamantly insists do not exist...may well be above his very nose.' End of statement."

UNFINISHED BUSINESS FOR THE SECOND TERM

Indeed, the president and Republican Congress have been rock solid on almost
everything - except federal spending.

- Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform, American Spectator, March 2004

REALLY BAD INTELLIGENCE

Hi Chuck. Speaking of intelligence-gathering, our side did wonderfully compared to
Saddam's intelligence-gathering. His CIA equivalent had to convince him that the U.S.
would not attack, and if the U.S. did attack it would lose, and if the U.S. happened
to win, that it would quickly tire of the whole thing and leave, leaving Saddam in
charge. Now is that bad intelligence-gathering or what?

- News & Views reader Larry Maturo

WEENIES & THUGS FOR KERRY

Last weekend John Kerry, while meeting with a small group of Florida contributors,
claimed: I've met foreign leaders who can't go out and say this publicly, but boy,
they look at you and say, 'You've got to win this, you've got to beat this guy, we
need a new policy, things like that.' . . . . Whether or not he actually met with
any of these leaders, I would suspect that he is right that they would much prefer to
do business with a notional President Kerry. Doubtlessly, Soviet leader Leonid
Brezhnev enjoyed dealing with President Carter more than with President Reagan.

- Columnist Tony Blankley

McCAIN MUTINY II?

Republican Sen. John McCain allowed a glimmer of hope Wednesday for Democrats
fantasizing about a bipartisan dream team to defeat President Bush. McCain said he
would consider the unorthodox step of running for vice president on the Democratic
ticket in the unlikely event he received such an offer from the presidential
candidate. John Kerry is a close friend of mine. We have been friends for years,
McCain said Wednesday when pressed to squelch speculation about a Kerry-McCain ticket.
Obviously I would entertain it. "

- Associated Press, 3/11/04

LATEST MEDIA HYPE EXPOSED

Voter turnout in the Democratic presidential contests that quickly sealed the
nomination for Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry was one of the lowest on record,
according to a study released yesterday. The findings were in sharp contrast to the
media-driven image of an angry and energized Democratic electorate turning out in
droves in the party's delegate-selection contests through the Super Tuesday primaries.

- Washington Times, 3/10/04

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Supporters of gay marriage in California scored a major symbolic triumph yesterday.
David Knight, son of the state senator who wrote the California ballot measure that
banned same-sex marriage, wed his partner in a ceremony atop the grand staircase of
San Francisco's City Hall. Mr. Knight and Joe Lazzaro of Baltimore exchanged rings
and were pronounced spouses for life one month after Mr. Knight's father, GOP Sen.
William Pete Knight, had dismissed San Francisco's same-sex marriage rush as
nothing more than a sideshow.
