Last year, he barred a similar lease to use a city park. Citing church-state separation, the American Civil Liberties Union had sued the city and the Boy Scouts on behalf of a lesbian couple and an agnostic couple. Judge Jones, a 1994 appointee of President Clinton, called the Scouts an admittedly religious, albeit nonsectarian, and discriminatory organization. - American Scene, Washington Times, 4/22/04 YER PUBLIK SKOOLS AT WERK One-half of Philadelphia middle school teachers couldn't pass a basic federal competency test. As they said on Fox News last night, this means that middle school students in Philly have a 50/50 chance of being right when they say that their teachers don't know what they're talking about. - Talk show host Neal Boortz, 4/22/04 TODAYS DOSE OF FRANKENFREUDE Looks like things are getting worse for Air America. Al Franken and Company are down to being on the air in only one major city (New York). - Talk show host Neal Boortz, 4/22/04 STUPID NOT THE SAME AS FUNNY David Shaw, the Pulitzer-prize winning media critic for the Los Angeles Times, decided to try out Air America, the new liberal talk radio network, by listening to it for a full 17 hours on Good Friday. His conclusion: It may have been the most boring day of my life. Mr. Shaw, an admitted liberal, says he started from the premise that talk radio is ideally suited to conservatives, but that Air America might succeed by matching conservatives' invective and being funny at the same time. Mr. Shaw did find plenty of name-calling on Air America. . . . What Mr. Shaw didn't find was laughs. - John Fund, Political Diary, 4/20/04 HELP WANTED: HUMAN FACE FOR DRUG INDUSTRY The pharmaceutical sector deserves its own Lee Iacocca. Just as Chrysler's former chairman personified his company and business in 1980s TV commercials, drug makers need a top executive as their industry's instantly-identifiable human face. Such a spokes-honcho could battle what I call the Free Drugs Now! movement. This claque of activists, generic producers, public-interest lawyers and politicians is arranging the slow-motion nationalization of this vital sector. The Free Drugs crowd demands roughly this of big pharma: Help Granny stay wise and witty past age 100. Guarantee every American couple a sizzling sex life until the very moment one's spouse expires. Cure AIDS, cancer, and the common cold. Let anyone who wishes copy these discoveries. Give us these remedies for little or nothing. Do it at once. And no, you may not make any money in the process. This oversimplifies the activists' wish lists, but barely. - Columnist Deroy Murdock TIME TO DRAIN THE SYRIAN SWAMP? The pathway into Iraq for many foreign fighters is through Syria. Its a fact. . . . The Syrians could do more to stop it. - Gen. Richard Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, CNN Sunday, 4/18/04 HES NOT UNPATRIOTIC...JUST NAIVE Our democracy is a farce; it is not the best in the world." Communism was not a threat to our country - John Kerry in a 1971 speech at West Virginias Bethany College, Political Diary, 4/22/04 KERRYS MODIFIED LIMITED HANGOUT Though the (John Kerry) campaign released more than 120 pages of Navy records yesterday, Mr. Kerry still refused to release medical records that more thoroughly describe the injuries. Among the records that the campaign will not release is any explanation for the injuries that led to Mr. Kerry's first Purple Heart, less than a month after going into combat. - Washington Times, 4/22/04 MAKING MOUNTAINS OUT OF MOLEHILLS The idea that John Kerry would have put in for three Purple Hearts during only four months in country is just ridiculous. Most of us came away with all kinds of scratches like the ones Kerry got but never accepted Purple Hearts for them." - Mel Howell from Evansville, Ind., a retired Navy officer who flew helicopters in Vietnam, Washington Times, 4/22/04 ENVIRO-WACKOS OF THE WORLD UNITE Three environmental groups yesterday announced a campaign to oust President Bush from office, but nationwide surveys show voters don't much care about the topic this election year. The League of Conservation Voters, Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund and Friends of the Earth Action are targeting swing voters in parts of Florida, New Mexico, Oregon and Wisconsin via door-knocking, phone calls, mailings and TV advertising. . . . But pollsters say Mr. Kerry of Massachusetts likely won't get much traction from the issue because this year voters have two main concerns: the economy and national security amid the war on terrorism. - Washington Times, 4/22/04 CONFLICT-OF-INTEREST FOR DUMMIES Jamie Gorelick has now issued her defense for staying on the September 11 commission, and the usual media and Democratic suspects are rallying behind her. So let's put the issue as simply as possible: If Clinton-era Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick were not already a commission member, does anybody doubt that she would be called to testify before it? . . . Ms. Gorelick's failure to resign and testify herself in the face of a clear conflict of interest is reason enough for the American public to distrust (the commissions) ultimate judgments. - Wall Street Journal editorial, 4/21/04 "The commission findings need to have truth and credibility, and with (Jamie Gorelick) remaining on the commission, that will not be the end result. - Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, Florida Republican The (September 11) commission is a reunion of political has-beens who haven't had face time since 'Seinfeld' was a weekly show. In their scramble to make the evening news, they've turned this grave matter into a get-even-for-Monica investigation - a switch the American people see right through." - Rep. Jack Kingston, Georgia Republican Obviously, (Jamie Gorelicks) got a vested interest in this to make sure this (September 11) commission clearly comes out and blames somebody in some organization other [than] and some policies other than the ones she was integral in formulating. - Rep. Peter Hoekstra, Michigan Republican BRUSHFIRE ALERT Jamie Gorelick is impossibly conflicted as a member of the September 11 commission. The commission already has one black eye for allowing itself to be used as a partisan attack dog against the President in this election year. If it allows Gorelick to remain on the commission, its final report will be a joke that only hard-core Bush-whackers will take seriously. Gorelick needs to step down...now. After our Tabor Tales website hit the net about ten days ago, young Nathan Tabor, North Carolina 5 congressional candidate, realized hed made a horrendously stupid political mistake. So he sent us a short, insincere apology (I am sorry for offending you), then falsely told folks I said Id take the site down if he did so. Well, no. What I told the Clown Prince was that I would forgive, but not forget. And I have no intention of letting the conservative movement forget what a totally unqualified boob this boy makes as a potential member of the United States Congress. I havent written about him this week because, frankly, there have been far more important issues for me to deal with...such as unclogging the bathroom sink and getting my shoes shined. In the meantime, the mainstream press discovered Tabor Tales. Peter Roff of UPI, Theo Helms of the Winston Salem Journal and Jim Morrill of the Charlotte Observer have all written on our new website. You can find links to the full stories by clicking on the Nate News button at www.tabortales.com And finally: In response to an NC-5 voters email and suggestion, weve removed the Soyboy Playboy page from TaborTales.com. And while the Taborites think this indicates some kind of concession or diminishing interest on our part, this is nothing more than an acknowledgement that our beef is with Nates political campaign...not soy products or his brothers company. So well try to limit any discussion of the Soyboys business to aspects which relate to his campaign. Such as... AN FEC COMPLAINT IN THE MAKING The above notwithstanding, this email from a reader IS something concerning both Nates brothers company and Nates campaign, so it is certainly fair game. It also raises some serious questions which the Taborites need to answer, maybe even under oath... I think somebody needs to investigate Revival Soy's involvement with Nathan's campaign. They paid for Oliver North to speak in Winston-Salem and Wilkesboro. His speaking fees are around $30,000.Supposedly, it was a Revival Soy event that was open to the public, but I hear they kicked Vernon Robinson and his campaign manager out when they showed up. Also, pictures of Nathan andLt. Col.North are on his campaign website. I don't believe Revival ever hosted political speakers before Nathan started campaigning. Also, why does Nathan pass out free soy bars (which are usually ridiculouslyoverpriced)to woo voters? Are these accounted for on the FEC reports? I thought there were laws against corporations giving these kind of contributions to candidates. Hmmmm. Where are those complaint forms? NATES WOEFUL FINANCIAL SUPPORT The money chase in NC-5 is rather interesting. Three of the candidates in the race - Vernon Robinson, Jay Helvey and Ed Broyhill - have all reported over a million dollars in the kitty so far, according to Winston Salem Journal reporter Theo Helm. By contrast, our boy Nathan reported less than half that: $501,487. But not so fast. Its even LESS impressive than it appears. See, Lil Nate kicked in more than half of THAT total himself, with $273,133 coming from personal contributions and loans to the campaign (not including contributions from family and friends or general election contributions which cant be used in the primary). By comparison, Tabor opponent Vernon Robinson has raised an eye-popping $1,582,213...NONE of which has come from personal contributions or loans. In other words, comparatively speaking, theres practically NO support for Nathans campaign coming in from anyone other than...well, Nathan. Indeed, the Political Money Line lists Tabor as being the 17th highest self-contributor of all congressional candidates in the ENTIRE NATION. Kinda reminds you of the old story about having to tie a ham-bone around the babys neck to even get the dog to play him. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Chuck Muths News & Views is published by Citizen Outreach, a non-partisan, 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
