EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT...

If you havent refreshed your memory in a while about exactly what it was the Founders
were declaring independence from back in 1776, you can find their/our Declaration of
Independence posted on todays News & Views EXTRA page at:
http://www.chuckmuth.com/newsandviews/nv.cfm.

THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY

Founding Fathers and former presidents Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on
the exact same day of the exact same year...July 4, 1826...on exactly the 50th
anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. What are the odds?

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first
time, it was decided that man is born with certain God-given rights; that government
is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own
except those voluntarily granted to it by the people. We sometimes forget that great
truth, and we never should. Happy Fourth of July.

- Ronald Reagan, President of the United States (1981)

CELEBRATING OUR BIRTHDAY

The best way to celebrate Independence Day is to understand that we must counter the
seduction of dependence on government which robs us of our liberty.

- Richard E. Ralston of Americans for Free Choice in Medicine

NO TIME FOR HEROES

In California last week, Democrats in the state assembly refused to allow a floor
ceremony honoring Admiral Jeremiah Denton for the Fourth of July. Denton was a Navy
pilot who was shot down over Vietnam and then spent eight years of hell in a POW camp.
The Democrats said there wasnt enough time due to budget negotiations and other
pressing business. Part of the pressing business that day: A 20-minute ceremony
honoring a Los Angeles Times reporter.

A DIFFERENT COURSE OF ACTION

Repeatedly, (terrorists) had struck America (during the 1990s) with little cost or
consequence. In none of these cases did the United States (under President Clinton)
respond very forcefully. Under President Bushs leadership, we answered that
challenge with decisive and relentless action. We did not fire million-dollar cruise
missiles into empty tents, or drop bombs from 30,000 feet on abandoned obstacle
courses. Instead, America launched a broad and sustained war on terrorist networks
around the globe.

- Vice President Dick Cheney in New Orleans on Thursday

REAP WHAT YE SOW

The United Nations as a whole ganged up on the United States to force the U.S.
soldiers under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court for any actions
which might be taken during U.N. military missions. The Bush administration sought to
obtain a waiver for U.S. troops, but the votes werent there. So what did the Bush
administration do?

They announced this week that the U.S. would begin withdrawing U.S. troops from some
U.N. missions. The U.N. is very upset with the decision.

Nice job, Kofi. Duh.

THEN AND NOW

Then (in the late 1980s), as now, I thought Al Gore was an unprincipled loser. Then,
as now, I thought he needed to grow up. Then, as now, I wished he would just go away.
. . . As the last sitting vice president since Hubert Humphrey to run for the White
House and lose, Al Gore consistently looks more smarmy than smart, calculating than
classy and always graceless under pressure - remember those sighs during the 2000
presidential debates.

- Columnist and former White House lobbyist Gary J. Andres

TRUTH IN LABELING

While I do not endorse using crude language in public, we would all be better served
if we knew what politicians really think. Who believes that my good friend baloney
members of Congress always say to each other?

- Columnist Cal Thomas on Dick Cheney telling Sen. Pat Leahy last week to go F
himself

FRENCH PREZ TO U.S. PREZ: BUTT OUT

President Bush threw his support behind Turkeys bid to join the European Union last
week. French President Jacques Chirac responded, Not only did he (Bush) go too far,
he ventured into territory which is not his concern. We suggest President Bush tap
Dick Cheney to give the official U.S. response to Chirac.

HECK, ITS ONLY TAXPAYER MONEY

According to the Washington Times, in 2002 the United States taxpayers ponied up $3.6
million to send 236 persons to an AIDS conference in Barcelona, Spain. That comes to
over $15,000 per person. Yowza! Thats a lot of caviar in a five-star resort!

This year, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson put the kibosh on such
an outrageous expenditure. Hell only be sending 50 HHS employees to this months
conference in Bangkok at a cost of $250,000...or $5,000 per person.

Some Democrats in Congress are howling mad that more people arent being allowed to go
(on the taxpayers dime), but Thompsons folks say that with technology being what it
is today, anyone wanting to participate can do so via teleconferencing. Indeed.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO COZ

Bill Cosby is NOT backing down. His stinging criticism of black culture in this
country last month stirred up a hornets nest among so-called black leaders who
attacked Cosby for airing the black communitys dirty laundry in public. But at
another conference this week, Coz stayed on offense.

Let me tell you something, Cosby told attendees. Your dirty laundry gets out of
school at 2:30 every day. Its cursing and calling each other niggers as theyre
walking up and down the street. They think theyre hip. They cant read; they cant
write. Theyre laughing and giggling...and theyre going nowhere.

Hoo-hah! Can you imagine if a white dude said something like that? It would be
mandatory sensitivity and diversity training for sure.

Cosby also told black men to stop beating up your women because you cant find a job,
because you didnt want to get an education and now youre (earning) minimum wage.
You should have thought more of yourself when you were in high school, when you had an
opportunity. He also told blacks to stop blaming whites for problems in the black
community such as teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates. Holy personal
responsibility, Batman!

But are the so-called black leaders listening? Not a chance. Check out this one...

MEANWHILE, BACK IN DETROIT

Detroit has followed the lead of two other large cities - Los Angeles and Chicago -
in enacting legislation that requires companies seeking contracts with the city to
disclose any profits received from slavery. . . . The purpose of this ordinance is to
set the groundwork for [slavery] reparations. First, you have to get the information
and show the companies that benefited from the slave trade, Detroit City Councilwoman
Barbara-Rose Collins, a former Democratic congresswoman from Michigan and sponsor of
the Detroit ordinance, said Tuesday.

- Washington Times, 7/1/04

YOUR GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS IN ACTION

Ah, the worst of both worlds: Rap music and government schools. You just KNOW nothing
good could come of it. And youd be right. Get this: Schools outand in some
jurisdictions around the country, theyre replacing Shakespeare with Shakur for their
summer reading assignment.

That's slain gangsta rapper Tupac Shakur - the drug-dealing, baseball bat-wielding,
cop-hating, Black Panthers-worshipping, convicted sexual abuser who made a fortune
extolling the thug life before he was gunned down in Las Vegas eight years ago,
writes columnist Michelle Malkin. Teachers in Worcester, Mass., have embraced
Shakur's posthumously published book of poems as a way to get middle school students'
attention. We wanted to include books that kids would want to read, Michael
O'Sullivan, a member of the summer reading list selection committee, explained to the
Telegram and Gazette of Worcester last month before school let out.

A Worcester Public School official told Malkin that Shakur's book will remain on the
list (of summer reading) for the foreseeable future because it heightens awareness of
character education and, more importantly, because it's popular with the kids.

Malkin notes a sample awareness heightener Tupac penned in one of his poems titled 2
Marilyn Monroe, which reads: They could never understand what u set out 2 do instead
they chose 2 ridicule u." Thats only a reading assignment if youre majoring in
hieroglyphics.

By the way, wheres the teachers union while something this stupid is going on? Oh,
wait a minute, here they are...

YOUR TEACHERS UNION IN ACTION

Reg Weaver, president of the National Education Association, has come under fire for
an award the union was to present last night to Kevin Jennings, the founder of the Gay
Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN). The goal of Jennings organization is to
incorporate homosexual concepts into all curriculum and ensuring that only positive
discussions about homosexuality are allowed into elementary school classrooms,
including kindergarten.

Kindergarten? Are you kidding? Do they know about this in New Jersey?

Gee, wouldnt it be nice if the teachers union was more interested in ensuring that
reading, writing and rithmetic were allowed in the government schools instead?

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority
keen to set brush-fires in people's minds."

- Founding Father Samuel Adams
