BE FREE...TO KILL AGAIN

Several detainees released by the U.S. military from the detention center in
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have rejoined their former comrades-in-arms and taken part in
fresh attacks on American troops, according to Defense Department officials and a
senior Republican lawmaker.

- UPI, 7/6/04

SURVEY SAYS!

Was the selection of John Edwards as John Kerrys running mate President Bushs worst
nightmare...or an early Christmas present?

TRANSFER OF POWER

By choosing John Edwards over Dick Gephardt, the Democrats today transferred power in
their party from the labor unions to the trial lawyers.

- Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, on John Kerrys selection of
Edwards as his running mate, 7/6/04

THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW

In the Senate four years -- and that is the full extent of public life -- no
international experience, no military experience ... When I came back from Vietnam in
1969, I don't know if John Edwards was out of diapers then. Well, I'm sure he was out
of diapers."

- John Kerry on John Edwards, New York Times, 1/9/04

JOHN EDWARDS IS NO JOHN GALT

John Kerry was against John Edwards before he was for him. But now he's his running
mate. Who is John Edwards? A disingenuous, unaccomplished liberal and friend to
personal injury trial lawyers.

- Republican National Committee, 7/6/04

THE TWO JOHNS

More weirdly still -- and it's hard to figure out why the (John) Kerry people didn't
think about this -- there's something ineffably fingernail-grating about the match.
The two just don't look right together. With (John) Edwards yapping at his feet, Mr.
Kerry would resemble an old Bostonian taking his cocker spaniel for a walk..

- Holman Jenkins, Political Diary, 7/6/04

ANOTHER SOUTHERN WHITE BOY

Note that none of the finalists (on John Kerrys veep list) were women nor people
of color. Edwards happens to be a White, Southern male. Where's the diversity in that?

- Rich Galen, Mullings, 7/7/04

ALL SIZZLE AND NO STEAK

By the normal rules for choosing a vice president, Mr. Edwards doesn't add much. He
doesn't guarantee victory in his home state, North Carolina, which George W. Bush won
by 13 points in 2000. He doesn't bring ideological or gender balance to the ticket,
though he provides a jot of geographical breadth, for whatever that's worth. As a
one-term senator, he offers meager national experience in sharp contrast to Vice
President Cheney. Mr. Edwards might have produced unity among Democrats except they're
already united in a crusade to oust Mr. Bush. But he is an exceptionally exciting
campaigner, and this matters all the more because Mr. Kerry is so pompous and
ponderous a public presence.

- Columnist Fred Barnes

VOODOO POLITICS

Nine prominent Democrats, elected members of the House of Representatives, have sent
a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, begging him to send UN monitors to
oversee the 2004 election. Texas representative Eddie Bernice Johnson led the latest
effort to subvert the sovereignty of the United States and place us under the control
of the increasingly-corrupt United Nations. Let me get this straight. A group of
Democrats want to bring some people from countries like North Korea, Iran, Syria,
China and Cuba -- people that have never seen a democratic election in their lifetimes
-- to sit in judgment on our elections? What kind of voodoo politics is that?

- Columnist Joe Mariani

LEGISLATING VICE FOR FUN & PROFIT

Massachusetts yesterday became the sixth state to ban smoking in just about all
businesses and workplaces, and last week the U.S. Justice Department laid out charges
in a Clinton-era lawsuit against the tobacco companies seeking $280 billion in
damages. Among the charges: Cigarette manufacturers deliberately lured customers into
an addictive habit by concealing the risks of smoking. Never mind that government,
with lawsuits and legislated taxes, has made itself the primary beneficiary of
revenues generated by smoking. Isn't it time to ask what exactly is our government's
purpose in its campaigns for and against vice?

- Holman W. Jenkins Jr., Political Diary, 7/6/04

WHERE ARE THE GOOD TEACHERS?

Why does it seem there are fewer and fewer good teachers in the government school
system? Could it be that the good ones also harbor what can generally be considered
conservative principles when it comes to standards and discipline (which they have
to hide)? Read about how the system works against hiring good teachers...from one
of the good ones...in this enlightening column posted on GOPUSA.com.

THE MISNAMED PARTY

The Constitution Party has nominated Michael A. Peroutka as its presidential candidate
for 2004. He said his first priorities would be, according to a Washington Times
report, to outlaw abortion, followed by establishing a government that acknowledges
God.

If Peroutkas objective is to establish a biblical theocracy, why do they call
themselves the Constitution party?
