In the next version I'm going to make this message a debug message, which will
prevent emails when the server is down. Secondly, I'll drop it to once a day.
In the meantime, you can disable auto-check by modifying this value in your
configuration file:
# Automatically download any bugfix handlers. (Checks every few hours.)
'auto_download_bugfix_updates' => 'yes',
Change it to 'no'.

That may be the right solution. I suspect that the increased traffic is partly
responsible for the server problems.
