The Obama campaign needs your help with voter protection in three states:
Ohio, North Carolina and New Mexico.

Below is a message from the campaign.

Today's message from policy committee member Ali Nathan highlights
another important area where we need everyone's help: Voter
Protection. You know from our previous messages how important it is
that we turn out our supporters to vote on Election Day but it is
just as important that the states count the votes of everyone
qualified to vote who shows up to vote. Ali is our National Voter
Protection Senior Advisor. She headed up our voter protection
efforts in several of the primary states this spring and is working
hard to make sure everyone's vote gets counted on November 4. But
before we get to Ali's message, I have some guidance for those of you
who are not lawyers and a separate suggestion for those of you who
are lawyers (or at least think like a lawyer).

First, all you non-lawyers, I'm sure you are saying to yourself that
this appeal does not concern you. You are wrong. Even if you are
not a lawyer, I'll bet you know a lawyer. So what you should do is
forward Ali's message to every lawyer you know and ask all of them to
forward it to all the lawyers they know. If you can recruit one or
more lawyers to this task, you will be a huge help to the voter
protection effort.

Second, for all of you lawyers and law students, you're probably
thinking that if you sign up for voter protection on Election Day,
you'll be doing enough for the campaign in the last 16 days. You too
are wrong. Certainly, we appreciate your help on Election Day to
protect the vote but we still have more than two weeks until Election
Day. We hope you will consider signing up for GOTV for the next two
weekends as well in addition to protecting the vote on Election Day.

Now, here's Ali's message:
----------------------------------------------------

Dear Larry,

I also want to write from personal experience about what a difference
volunteering makes. In this case, the particular volunteer need is
on the voter protection front. In the primaries, I was involved in
several key states on the voter protection team. In an election that
is bringing so many new and first-time voters into the process, the
help that lawyers and law students can provide to voters on Election
Day is enormous and very meaningful. During the primaries I spoke to
hundreds of new voters who might not have voted because of inaccurate
information they had about the voting rules.

Just today, I spoke to a newly registered voter in Pennsylvania who
said that he wanted to vote for Barack Obama but wrongly assumed he
couldn't because he had lost the voter registration card that had
been sent to him by the County. Other folks I have spoken to thought
they could not vote for Barack Obama in the general election because
they are not registered Democrats.

And with massive turnout expected and the voter suppression efforts
under way by the McCain campaign, the need for a deep army of lawyers
and law students to help promote and protect the vote is truly
significant.

The campaign and DNC have set up an unprecedented voter protection
program. But we still need more volunteers. And there is a
particular need for folks who live in or are willing to travel to
Ohio. I strongly encourage folks who are not already committed to
activities in a battleground state to consider traveling to Ohio for
the weekend, do get-out-the vote activities on the weekend and
Monday, and then volunteer as a voter protection poll observer on
Election Day.

Volunteering for voter protection is truly working on the front lines
of democracy!

Best,

Ali Nathan
