Warren Ingber has sent me this strong list of stories and/or contacts for all those of you who want to push the press to shine a light on what's been happening or what's now threatening to happen. Warren shares my disappointment (that's too weak a word) at the inaction of the DNC and the Obama campaign vis-a-vis the danger posed by electronic voting.
This is not for wider circulation, but to give you some ideas for action right away. MCM >Mark, > >Brad Friedman (who is appearing on Fox as I write) echoed your >impression of a lack of interest in electronic vote theft on the >part of the Obama campaign. Asked about the risk of vote tampering >in his recent ><http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/23589412/obamas_moment/print>Rolling >Stone interview, Obama said, "Well, in Ohio the thing we did was >make sure there was a Democratic secretary of state." That may make >it harder to tell how much to flip, but it's hardly an answer, and >there are far too many states in play this time around to rely on >Democratic management. > >Looking at the crowds he drew in Missouri, I can see why he would >think turnout will see to the rest. But it's imprudent not to devote >resources to guard against computer problems. Obama's lead in the >polls has been narrowing and may well narrow further in the home >stretch, since that's the pattern in national elections. > >I thought about things that might be done and looked around for some >possible leads. Here are a few stories and action items I came up >with and thought I'd share with you. > >1. Friedman has posted a <http://www.bradblog.com/?p=6528>report >of Obama-to-McCain vote flips in early voting in Jackson County, WV. >(The original story is ><http://wvgazette.com/News/200810170676>here). In a ><http://wvgazette.com/News/200810180251>follow-up story, D-to-R >flips were reported in Putnam County. So chickens are coming home to >roost. That just might make the issue more tangible and less >tinfoil-hattish to the campaign. The reporter, Paul J. Nyden , gives >his email address and phone number at the end of each story, so he >could be reached to learn if the Obama campaign had any comment on >the matter, and you could take it from there. (I thought of writing >him but thought you might want the first crack.) At the same time >you seem to be in a position to see if someone in the campaign is >onto the matter. >2. Friedman also <http://www.bradblog.com/?p=6524>reported on >slow early voting in Tennessee because of long validation times on >electronic machines (original story ><http://www.murfreesboropost.com/news.php?viewStory=13500>here). >That's another tangible warning sign. Here too the reporter, >Michelle Willard, gives her email address and phone number. >3. I will drop Schumer a short fax on the West Virginia and >Tennessee problems since a Senate campaign is implicated (a vote >moved from Jay Rockefeller to his opponent), and he is never shy >about taking an issue public. >4. McClatchy's Greg Gordon reported in August on the >unreliability of electronic voting machines ><http://www.mcclatchydc.com/staff/greg_gordon/story/50485.html>here. >He might be worth reaching since McClatchy stories do make the >rounds. >5. Michael Winship followed up on the anti-ACORN hoax ><http://www.truthout.org/article/101808A>here. Perhaps he could be >induced to do the same about electronic voting risks given your >appearance on the show he writes for. >6. John Conyers has ><http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/conyers_on_fbiacorn_probe.php>written > >to Mukasey and Mueller about the investigation of ACORN, noting its >irregularities. (It's nothing short of astonishing that this issue >has reached Congress! That's one of the things the DOJ guidelines >are supposed to prevent, but they're good enough to step in the >minefield, so why sit on our hands?) Conyers gave the two until >Thursday to explain themselves. Knowing his interest in election >integrity, his office might serve as a conduit to the campaign to >convey any and all of the above. >7. I've written to Richard Greene a few times about the >campaign's apparent (now confirmed) lassitude about e-voting scams >since you appeared on Clout, but now that Bill Moyers has broken the >story, it might merit another appearance. I don't know how he >manages such things, but at least you should know at least one >listener has shown an interest in the topic. > >I hope some of this is helpful. > >Regards, Warren Ingber --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to Mark Crispin Miller's "News From Underground" newsgroup.
