Toledo police officers have been instructed to carry with them riot
gear on Tuesday and Wednesday in case any problems arise as a result
of the election, Chief Mike Navarre said.

The chief said there is no specific information about potential civil
unrest in Toledo. The measures being taken are simply precautionary,
he said.

"It's called being prepared," Chief Navarre said. "There's probably
100 different cities doing the same thing we're doing."

Chief Navarre said similar precautions were taken during the 2004
presidential election.

While patrol officers have not been assigned to polling locations
throughout the city, they have been asked to "keep an eye" on them,
the chief said.

He said no additional officers are scheduled to work Tuesday or Wednesday.

On past election days, Chief Navarre said there have been minor
problems reported at polling locations.

Tempers sometimes flare when the lines to vote are lengthy or if
voters are turned away because they don't have proper identification,
he said.
