Dear Mark,

I suppose I will not be the only one to point out that Wilkerson
today says there has been no torture since Abu Ghraib revelations in
2004. Yet today you posted a report on our thugs beating the shit out
of detainees on Guantanamo. What gives?

Here's what gives: Wilkerson says that torture meant to extract
information hasn't happened
for some time. What's happening at Gitmo (and Wilkerson was not
referring to it) is something else--brutal treatment by a goon squad
put there to enforce a sort of discipline. You could
call it overly aggressive policing of the prisoners; but it amounts
to torture, as Jeremy Scahill
has noted.

So, while the torture that had some (perverted) purpose has now
stopped, our nation's personnel
are, right now, torturing the Gitmo prisoners for no good reason.
