Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood Reclaiming Childhood from
Corporate Marketers

The FCC has spoken. Now it's up to you.

In a report requested by CCFC and delivered to Congress this week,
the Federal Communications Commission sharply criticized BusRadio,
the company that hopes to make its highly commercialized radio
broadcasts compulsory listening for students on school buses.

The FCC urged local communities and state legislatures to take a
long, hard look at BusRadio. Because many school districts do not
learn the truth about BusRadio's marketing until after they have
signed a contract, it is critical that your school board hear from
you now.

take a moment to send the FCC's report to your local board of
education and urge them not to sign up with BusRadio.

You've already helped shape the report by submitting comments to the
FCC. The report concludes that the overwhelming majority of comments
assert "the potential harms inflicted on children by BusRadio far
outweigh the service's countervailing benefits." And the FCC shares
many of our core concerns, including:

BusRadio's claim of a maximum of 8 minutes of ads per hour vastly
understates the amount of its commercial content (p. 18).
BusRadio exploits the relationship between its on-air
personalities and young listeners by having its DJs pitch products
directly to students, a practice which is prohibited by the FCC in
broadcast media for children (p.20).
BusRadio's programming and website for students fail to maintain a
clear distinction between editorial and commercial content, as
required by the Children's Advertising Review Unit (p.20 & 21).
BusRadio "fails to enable parents to avoid exposure of their
children to undesirable content" (p.13).
BusRadio may make school buses less safe by distracting drivers (p.23).

No child should be forced to listen to BusRadio. That's why
<http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=luduwp7NSsqJwZjzvavT3XnZyCCcDPtp>your

school board needs to hear from you. And please, spread the word
about what the FCC's findings to friends, family, and on blogs and
social network sites.
