Regarding the turnout in DC on 9/12, William Rivers Pitt has sent me the URL for a photo taken by a friend: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2633/3914299074_28fdec29a2_b.jpg If that's a crowd of 80,000 people, I'm the Duke of York.
Now, if you want to see a genuinely massive crowd--although it got a fraction of the coverage that the DC hate-fest has received--check out these photos (which Will Pitt just put up on DU) of the immense protest of Bush/Cheney's war in February, 2003: ttp://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=6562707&mesg_id=6562707 Involving 36 million people, who took part in nearly 3,000 demonstrations globally, it was the largest anti-war action in world history--and, of course, Bush/Cheney just ignored it, as did, by and large, the US media. Now, this matters for a number of reasons, but the most important one is this: The casual exaggeration of the far right's actual numbers will make it that much easier for the GOP to steal a bunch of races next November--and even take the Big One in 2012. Such upsets will, as ever, be "explained" with perfect confidence--and on the basis of no solid evidence--as a result of the Republicans' successful efforts to sway "independents," and, therefore, the majority of voters. Meanwhile, millions of real voters will have been disenfranchised yet again, through purges (both legal and illegal) of the voter rolls, vote-flipping by the electronic voting apparatus, systematic shortages of the machines (in Democratic precincts only), vast disinformation drives, blunt intimidation tactics, and all the other by-now-standard strokes of vote suppression and election fraud. The preparations for such thievery either have been made already by the GOP, or are now being made, or will be made before the next Election Day--and yet Obama's party has, as usual, done nothing in response, while, by and large, the press continues to pay no attention. And so "the South"--as represented by those misfits on the Mall--may rise again, despite their madness, and the will of the electorate. You heard it here first. (And you probably will hear it nowhere else.)
