“Hmm….work always accumulates but rain comes only once in a while. Do come and enjoy it with me.” Rain Princess
http://www.go-nxg.com/?p=3734 This is not a tale about the rain but about a little girl who made me feel humble. My waterproof watch showed me that it was 7.30 p.m. I was caught in the traffic and I was on my trusty green scooter. It was drizzling hence I was in my full gear: raincoat and a helmet. All my prized possessions — cell phone and books — were safe out of the rain. It was getting late. I kept staring at my watch since I had nothing else to do. As if that could make time run faster or clear the traffic. The rain became more furious and everyone sought refugee under shop roofs and trees or what was left of those. Life changing I stopped my two- wheeler and sought shelter under the roof of a shop. It was a very tiny shop. The place was more of a slum and I had no interest of staying there for too long. I was getting worried, it was getting dark, my tummy was getting into a vibratory mood. I need a constant supply of food to keep me going. To top it all I had a lot of work to be done before college the next day. I was brought back to the present as I heard a girl hum “Mazhai… mazhai …” (Rain …rain…). She was a small girl; soaking wet from head to toe. I couldn’t but help notice how she enjoyed herself in this horrible rain. All the rain water had collected to form a puddle in front of her house. She was jumping with joy. Just before I could drift back into my own thoughts she said “Hi akka…” with a bright big smile. I said “Hi” with the best smile I could bring forth. She was praising the rain and I was in no mood to do so. She asked “Do you like the rain?” I was not in the mood for all this but said “May be… at times I guess…” She kept silent and then said “Why do you look so worried?” My mood was bad enough; and all I needed was a 10-year-old counsellor. But I needed to be polite, so, “Well, I have work but I can’t go home due to rain” She said “Hmm….work always accumulates but rain comes only once in a while. Do come and enjoy it with me.” I smiled and the rain slowed down. I gave her a chocolate and left. She gave me an enthusiastic “Bye akka!” But when I came home I thought about what she had said. What she said applied not only to rainy days but also to life. Life is filled with many moments of happiness but our mind is clouded with thoughts of pending work or worries and hence we fail to notice it. She taught me to see the silver lining in the cloud. Why spend our short lives worrying? Let us face life’s challenges like a game and not a burden. Since then I take time off to enjoy the rain and at times even hum and dance in the rain just like she did…the princess!
