Kochi: The Kerala state government has invited applications for the 
Merit-cum-Means Scholarships for the academic year 2009-10. The scholarship is 
awarded by the central Ministry of Minority Affairs. Students belonging to the 
Muslim and Christian communities in Kerala who are pursuing the listed 
technical/professional courses at the undergraduate or postgraduate level can 
apply for the scholarship. 
The last date of the receipt of applications is 20-08-2009. Students should 
submit their application forms to the head of the institution/college, who will 
then forward it to the state’s Department of Technical Education. For 
application forms and more details regarding the scholarship, students can 
visit the website of the Department of Technical Education: 
www.dtekerala.gov.in/mcms 
A student should have secured admission in any technical/professional 
institution to be eligible for the scholarship. In case of students who have 
been admitted without any competitive exam, they should have acquired 50% marks 
in the qualifying higher secondary or graduation level. The annual income of 
the family from all sources should not exceed Rs 2.50 lakhs. 
Full reimbursement of course fee is available for the students at the Indian 
Institute of Management, Kozhikode, the National Institute of Technology, 
Calicut and the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kannur, in the state.
This year, 830 Muslim students and 639 Christian students will get the 
scholarships under this category of merit cum means scholarships in the state.
In the last academic year 2008-09, the Ministry of Minority Affairs sanctioned 
a total of Rs 5,40,31,879 for the merit cum means scholarships in the state, 
for which 2239 students were selected.
The merit cum means scholarship was introduced by the central government in 
2007. Thirty per cent of the scholarships is earmarked for girls.
The maintenance allowance will be credited to the student’s account. The course 
fee will be paid by the state department directly to the institute concerned.
