--------------------------------- [36] Inter can't see Becks deal --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti "Seeing as the rapport with United coach Alex Ferguson has deteriorated it is probable that at a certain point Manchester will release him. But there are two matters here. The football fan would say yes. It is a tantalising prospect and who wouldn't sign such a champion? But the director says that no club at the moment are in a position to spend so much. His valuation is prohibitive. From the practical point of view I can't see a do-able deal" --------------------------------- [35] More on Ayala bid --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: Valencia president Jaime Orti: "Ayala is a key player and we are only willing to let him go for £23million. I know about the bid, but we're not prepared to do a deal at the moment." club advisor Jesus Barrachina told Radio Marca: "For a fee like that it is not even a consideration, we wouldn't even bother to open the envelope which contains the offer." --------------------------------- [34] Salford Van Hire --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: Theres only one Van the Man, One Van the Man, Imagine him & Ole In Glasgow come May Van Man is a legend now today. Theres only one Van the Man, One Van the Man, Hes got a daft grin But he smashes em in With Van Man we shall always f-ckin' win. Theres only one Van the Man, One Van the Man, Scorings his game Makes defenders look lame Van Man ...we shall always chant your name. Theres only one Van the Man, One Van the Man, His name is so long And its often spelt wrong But Van Man gets us breaking into song . Theres only one Van the Man, One Van the Man, With his Alice band And the match ball in hand Van Man is so f-ckin' grand. TheBirdman --------------------------------- [33] Ex striker on Ruud --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: As Ruud and Greedy Bastard go for the Premiership scoring in consecutive games record (United's all time record of 8 goals in 8 games is held by Billy Whelan) Malcolm Macdonald said: "Shearer and van Nistelrooy will be unstoppable and one of them will get the record. They have both built up incredible momentum, not just for themselves but also for their clubs. Manchester United have won each game of van Nistelrooy's streak. He has really sparked them into life. It's the same for Shearer and Newcastle...With every goal they score the pressure lifts and they become more confident. The more confident they become, the greater the chance of scoring." --------------------------------- [32] More from Ruud --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "I want to keep my run going for a long, long time. Against Southampton I can make it seven in a row in the league for me. You can be sure that will be my aim." --------------------------------- [31] On the ball, as everq --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: The Mirror on a small report of the Villa pitch invasions says our allocation was 11,000 - doh. Just under 7,000 exactly - national newspaper... Doug Ellis is quoted praising the restraint shown by Villa fans "It was a difficult moment caused by United fans and fortunately our own supporters did not react. They were very well behaved, as they always are" --------------------------------- [30] More from West Ham Defoe on Di Canio --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "I think it would be a blow to the club if he left because he is such a great player and all the young players can learn a lot from him. He is important to the team but it is up to him what he wants to do. I don't want him to go, though. I can learn from him and I really enjoy working with him." --------------------------------- [29] More O'Leary --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "As I went past Sam, I said that as a club chairman, walking around the pitch had not done any good. When he went past the Leeds section there was a big surge forward. Who knows what could have happened? What staggers me is that he should want to do it. I find it amazing." --------------------------------- [28] O'Leary lost it --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: When confronting Sam Hamman he says: "Thank God my chairman Peter Ridsdale and three directors were with me. I was pulled away. Otherwise, it would have gone into a heated exchange." Er, hardly the way to behave is it - considering the events that day and all that has recently happened to nearly get in another row is really showing calm, caution and reason...not. --------------------------------- [27] SUN transfer talk --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: >From Gary Sun, page 45: Doug on Dwight line Doug Ellis wants to take Dwight Yorke back to Aston Villa. The Villa chairman is anxious to quell a potential fans revolt following their slide down the Premiership and FA Cup exit to Manchester United. And he believes the signing of Yorke, 30, could do just that. But Ellis could have a job persuading manager John Gregory to agree to it just a fortnight after refusing him the £8million to land Andy Cole. When Yorke left for Manchester United in 1998 Gregory famously said "If I'd had a gun I would have shot him". The Villa chairman wants to make a move after £7m-rated Yorke's move to Middlesborough stalled. Boro chairman Steve Gibson told boss Steve McClaren he needed to sell before he can buy. Sunderland are also keen while Fulham could re-enter the action following he collapse of the £8m John Carew transfer. Sun, page 45: Di Canio bid upped Manchester United are at last poised to complete the transfer of Paolo Di Canio. The champions have upped their offer for the 33-year-old West Ham striker to £3million. Now the only stumbling block is the Italian's £500,000 pay-off demand from the Hammers. He wants the cash after signing a two-year contract, worth £2m, with the Londoners in the summer. He has not asked for a move and the club rejected United's initial £2m offer. Hammers ace Jermain Defoe, who scored twice in their Cup win over Macclesfield on Sunday, wants Di Canio to stay. He said: "If Paolo goes it will be a blow to everyone here. But nobody can stop him if that's what he wants to do." --------------------------------- [26] Inter still want Becks --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: >From Ananova 'Inter Milan want to sign David Beckham on loan, according to the Daily Star. The Italian club are reluctant to pay £40million for the Manchester United player. They reportedly want to sign him on loan with a move to a permanent deal.' --------------------------------- [25] Fergie on Di Canio back in '99 --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "Paolo excites me, most definitely. Yes, he is controversial and you have to take the full package with him - warts and all - but he loves playing and shows such enthusiasm". --------------------------------- [24] Di Canio thanks West Ham fans --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "I would make clear that I've never asked to leave West Ham United and until the club say different, I am a West Ham player. I've always been loyal to West Ham United and love the club and its fantastic supporters. That's why I kiss the badge and whether I play for West Ham, Manchester United or Macclesfield I will always kiss the badge because I love my job wherever I play and will always respect the people who believe in me." --------------------------------- [23] United make bid for Roberto Ayala --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: £10million bid for Roberto Ayala has been made according to his side, Valencia. Valencia press officer Jesus Paniagua said: "We have received an offer of 2,800million pesetas (£10.46million) from Manchester United for the player." Valencia advisor, Jesus Barrachina, told Radio Marca: "For a fee like that it (£10.46million) is not even a consideration, we wouldn't even bother to open the envelope which contains the offer." --------------------------------- [22] Sparky on Cole --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: As Andrew looks to see life at the other end by playing for Rovers in their 'important' League Cup semi against Sheffield Wednesday "It is a big decision for anyone to leave United when you still feel you could be a part of all they are doing. Andy doesn't need the financial rewards, but it is difficult to take because you want to be viewed as first choice wherever you are. There comes a point when you have to accept that it is time to move on, and Andy will have sat down and thought long and hard about coming here. But everyone here is delighted because he is such a wonderful player. I played with him for four or five months before he eventually replaced me, and he has always scored goals. You have to understand the experience he has had over the years, winning European Cups, FA Cups and league titles. He really is a great finisher and has played with the best for a number of years. His link-up play is first class and he is a great all-round footballer. Andy has got an aura about him, a certain presence, and will bring something exciting that maybe we haven't had before." --------------------------------- [21] Veron has secret clause --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: >From the SUN although we expect United to deny this later. ' DAVID BECKHAM has found himself on the sidelines at Manchester United because of a hush-hush clause in Juan Veron's contract. Becks returned to the team for Sunday's FA Cup win at Aston Villa following a month on the bench. And that absence was largely down to a verbal agreement between Veron and Alex Ferguson that the Argentine midfielder MUST play when he is fit. Veron, a £28.1million buy from Lazio, wanted assurances that his World Cup chances would not be harmed by Fergie's rotation policy. So his advisors secured a secret deal in his contract. Veron missed United's recent win at Fulham for family reasons but was straight back in the side for last week's victory against Newcastle as Becks was axed again. A source close to Veron revealed: "Juan took a big risk coming to England. He even has a clause in his contract that Lazio could have first option to buy him back if things went bad. "His people knew competition in United's midfield was very fierce. He was not going to risk his World Cup chances with Argentina for anything." --------------------------------- [20] Transfer gossip --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: According to the SUN it now could be Dwight to Villa and Di Canio to be confirmed as long as he can sort out a £500,000 'leaving fee' with West Ham. --------------------------------- [19] In the clear --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: Just as in 1999 no action will be taken against either United or Villa for the pitch invasions on Sunday as the FA see them as jubilant rather than malicious - although bet Boro use it as an excuse to cut back our allocation if they win at Wimbledon tonight and secure us in the next round. --------------------------------- [18] Ruud again on record --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "I have never been in a run like this before for scoring goals. I have never scored in seven games in a row for anyone, anywhere. I didn't know anything about it, being the first time any United player has done this, until after the game on Sunday. But it capped a beautiful first experience in the FA Cup for me. To break the club record in the tournament is extra special because it's such a fantastic competition. I always used to watch the FA Cup games on television in Holland so I know all its history. But although I have scored in the last seven games, it's more important that we have actually won all those matches to turn our season around. It's been a great run, but we have to make sure we keep it going. We have rescued a bad position but we are nowhere near there yet. We are going to have to win almost every game to take the title and still depend on other teams slipping up. But we have proved again we are never beaten until the final whistle is blown. We came back fro! m 3-0 down at half-time against Tottenham to win 5-3 and to recover from trailing 2-0 against Villa showed fantastic character and I was really proud to be part of it. They had a grip on the game when they were leading 2-0 but Ole Solskjaer's goal brought our spirit back. From that point we knew we could win it. For me to come on with 20 minutes to go and score the goals that took us into the next round is something I'll never forget." --------------------------------- [17] Henry on Cantona --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "I have two images of Canto: when he throws his shirt to the face of Guy Roux, and when he scores one particular goal with Manchester - he turns to the crowd, shows his torso around and watches the crowd. It's a game that Man U had won 4-0 or 5-0. He had scored with a flick. It's an image that I still remember." --------------------------------- [16] Various French players on Cantona the first --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: >From the Observer and the influence of French players on the game - namely Eric, of >course. You always need a reference, an example. Kopa had done it in Spain, Platini in Italy, and then there was a crazy migration of footballers. Canto did it here, and now it's England. Christian Karembeu (ex-Middlesbrough) He has so much personality, he's a real character. I don't have the same personality, but something is sure: his success at Manchester helped me when I arrived in England. Thanks to him, to what he has achieved, the Frenchies are better accepted here. But we don't have the same nature. I used to admire his big mouth, the man and his explosive nature, but I am much more reserved, so I don't think one can compare the two of us. Canto, some would like to copy him, but it is impossible. Patrick Vieira (Arsenal) I used to play with the collar up in Strasbourg and the French team. When I got here, I stopped doing it, as a mark of respect for him, but also because I wanted to make sure people would not say: he's doing just like Cantona. I met Canto two weeks after I got here. He said: 'How are you, Mr Leboeuf?' I said: 'I'm all right, Mr Cantona.' But we lived on two different planets. Frank Leboeuf (ex-Chelsea) Canto was not welcome in France any more, so he started all over in England. I told myself that, with the nature he has, the fact that he was almost like plague-stricken in France, and that I sometimes feel that people don't understand me, I might have an opportunity to flourish over there. Emmanuel Petit (Chelsea) --------------------------------- [15] In answer to our question --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: After Chadwick the sub was subbed on Sunday has it happened before - thanks to all of you (well, not all of you but the statto section - joking!) who gave us the answer - and the anonymous (well ok then, Najib) mate who rang my mobile to give me the name gets special despatches. Cheers to Nick for pointing out: 'Just a point of interest to sad anoraks like me - Simon Davies once came on as sub and was then subbed himself in a game at OT about 5-6 years ago. He went off looking totally gutted as it must be a bit embarrassing. Luke didn't look embarrassed, just his usual hideous self.' and to Richard, Naj and all others who knew it and to Andy D for another bit of know how 'alas the misfortune of coming on as sub and then being subbed in the same game has already fallen on one other United player - Quinton Fortune. Cast your mind back to Dynamo Kiev at home when we had to get a result to qualify for the next stages of European champions league (the one where the Kiev guy missed an absolute sitter in the final 5 minutes) Quinton came one in the first half (I forget who for) and then got replaced in the second half after achieving naff all in the meantime (some might argue he has never achieved anything for United)' --------------------------------- [14] Ole on Ruud --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "He is in fantastic form and it is case of if you give him the ball, you know he is going to create something." --------------------------------- [13] Ruud on Sunday --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "At 2-0 it looked as if Villa had a grip on the game but Ole's goal was important because it brought us back into the game and brought our spirit back. From that point I felt we could win and you could see that in all the players. We had showed we could do it at Tottenham when we were 3-0 down and we did a similar thing at Villa." --------------------------------- [12] Ruud on his run --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "I hope I can keep it going but the important thing was that it was our seventh victory in a row and the team deserve a lot of credit. We are in a great run but it must continue." --------------------------------- [11] Ruud didn't know he'd broken Utd scoring record --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: Of goals in 7 consecutive matches, if he scores in his next match he will equal the Premiership record too. "I never knew about the record until after the game on Sunday but it tops off a great first experience for me of the FA Cup. It is a beautiful introduction to the competition. It was marvellous. I had been looking forward to playing in it because the tournament is so important all over the world. It is in Holland where a lot of people, including myself, used to watch it on TV and are aware of its history. I was proud to be part of Sunday, to come on for 20 minutes and score the goals that took us through, and to break the record made it even more special. It is hard to say whether this is the best form of my career but I have certainly never been in a run like this in terms of scoring goals. I've never scored seven times in a row for anyone." --------------------------------- [10] Charlie Mitten R.I.P --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: >From Ananova 'The funeral has taken place of Charlie Mitten, one of the stars of Sir Matt Busby's first great Manchester United side. Along with Jimmy Delaney, Stan Pearson, Jack Rowley and Johnny Morris - Mitten, who died last Thursday - formed one of the most feared forward lines in the country. After his debut had been delayed by the Second World War, playing at outside left he helped United beat Blackpool 4-2 in the 1948 FA Cup Final. He gained the nickname of the 'Bogota Bandit' in 1951 when he joined Colombian side Sante Fe and received a £5,000 signing-on fee and £100-a-week wages. After a season he returned because he was homesick, and on the way he turned down an offer from the then Real Madrid president Santiago Bernabeu to play for the then relatively-unknown Spanish side. Bernabeu had offered him a £10,000 signing-on fee and it is a decision Mitten long regretted. Back at United, Busby made an example of him and did not pick him for six months. After scoring 82 goals in 221 appearances for United, Busby then sold him to Fulham for just under £20,000, where he played alongside Bobby Robson, Johnny Haynes and Jimmy Hill. He became manager of Mansfield in 1956 and two years later he took over at Newcastle and managed the Magpies until 1961.' --------------------------------- [9] Butt out for two weeks --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: Fergie "He got a groin injury unfortunately. He slipped going into a challenge and he had to come off quite early on." --------------------------------- [8] Are you sure? --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: Graham Poll is the English ref chosen for World Cup duty. --------------------------------- [7] Wenger on Fergie --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "What I like the most in him is that he always pushes his team to play passing football. It is a similarity with me. There is some kind of psychological war between us. When I criticised their opting out of the FA Cup, he thought I was not recognising their championship medal. But I admit they have qualities and I say that what they've done is quite magnificent. " --------------------------------- [6] More Cardiff-Leeds fall out --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: O'Dreary "Protecting the players is the refs job, but some of my players felt very threatened. He is the one out there and if he doesn't feel right he should take the players off. What the lads said at half-time was that there had been a number of objects thrown at them and what Nigel Martyn had to endure was horrific." Hammam said: "He has a very good club and a very good chairman but he lost his cool totally at half-time and full-time and if he wants to be a top manager he needs to control himself better." --------------------------------- [5] Ted Beckham on son deal --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: "The talks are ongoing. That is the official line and it is the truth. He doesn't tell me everything because he is 26 and his own man - I am not his keeper - but I know there is no problem and that he just wants to play for his one and only club. He's wanted to play for Manchester United since he could first kick a ball, and I used to take him to see United when they played the London clubs. He doesn't fancy moving abroad - I know that. It's his testimonial season at United next year and I believe he wants to stay at Old Trafford for the remainder of his career. He wants to sign for the fans and I don't see there being a problem - it's just a case of getting everything right. There is no greater stage than Old Trafford. When you leave United there is only one way you are going - down." As we say, having seen Ted celebrate at the end of the game at Villa Park you know you are in the company of true Reds - never forget it. --------------------------------- [4] Silvestre on Sunday --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: Exclusive translation for Red News by marc "We have got the feeling that the team is re-born, we have all got the same targets, the lads are extremly close, the atmosphere is terrific, so the results are there. With that system with Scholes in front of me, I have to push forward a lot, without forgetting to defend. The pitch invasion ? Part of the show !" --------------------------------- [3] Blanc on Sunday --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: Exclusive translation for Red News by marc Blanc : "Unbelievable, yes. But in England, especially in the Cup it happens ! Two months ago, we would never have won than one. For one month now, Manchester plays at his level, we win games, turn games around. The lads have realized that the quality is there. Everybody have realized that when we haven't got the ball we are a normal team and that we must all work to get that ball back. With the ball, we are untouchable." --------------------------------- [2] Quote of the day --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: Spotted by Steve Sam Hamman talking about O'Dreary, "He very clearly stated before the game that he wanted to do as well as he can in the FA Cup and start their campaign in Cardiff and end their campaign in Cardiff. Being nice Welsh people we obliged. He deserved it. " --------------------------------- [1] Red News deadline --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, January 8, 2002 by bar-knee: The deadline for the new issue - 83 - is Thursday so if you have any articles/letters/thoughts/graphics on everything and anything let us know. We'd luv it, truly luv it if you have any contributions. We've also been blighted by a few computer problems - if only it was as easy as in the films (and I don't just mean adult ones) - so have lost a few bits of date like e.mail addresses and anything that might have been sent over Xmas, so if you sent us anything and didn't hear a reply - it wasn't just because of lazyitis, so please send anything in again. Get those creative juices flowing... [EMAIL PROTECTED] --------------------------------- [30] Pitch Invasion --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 7, 2002 by redend: A Red perspective sent to mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] by Mark G Isn't it amazing what drink will do to an atmosphere, many reds were in the pub six hours before kick off, compare that to what the atmosphere was like at Fulham and its 1.00 kick off last season. If Villa didn't want a pitch invasion (or hot tea and the odd coin that got thrown at us from the Doug Ellis upper) then why did they give us the whole of the Doug Ellis lower tier? They could have given us the whole of the north stand, but of course that would have meant we would have got 500 more tickets. But having said that villa park was 4000 below capacity anyway (part timers) giving us more tickets would have meant more revenue for them. --------------------------------- [29] Rude Ruud Poem --------------------------------- Posted Monday, January 7, 2002 by redend: Thanks to Olly: Prepare yourselves, this is really quite bad... and sad ...
