Whether you are reading this via the web on the blog or just opened this message in your e-mail box, DoWire (Democracies Online Newswire) is about bringing together everyone in the world interested in building better democracies with information and communications technologies. With the new "Newswire" (formerly the DO-WIRE listserv) and the "Steven Clift's Notes" blog (same content, different channels) I'll continue with my focus on primary source materials with a bit more blog-like commentary on news items of interest. To be honest, there is so much happening out there it is easy to get caught in the volume of content and miss out on perspective and reflection. I need to remind myself that just because I saw something "new" in 1999 doesn't mean it isn't still new to most people in 2006. So while I shy away from boosterism, I will keep my optimistic tone sprinkled with a bit more realism from my years of practical e-democracy experience. When all of the remaining bad e-mail addresses are cleared out we will start with a healthy base of 2400 e-mail subscribers (still from about 80 countries) and an ever increasing number of "news feed" and blog readers. We also now have one of the world's best platforms for online communities of practice in place for DoWire Groups (GroupServer) which I will tell you more about in the coming weeks.
