A real highlight looks to be the Beyond Broadcast conference on Saturday. This is one of the best examples of a conference using a wiki to organized itself from working groups to birds of a feather dinner parties. They are also using del.icio.us to share links and Flickr to share photos all simply be encouraging folks to use the unique tag 'beyondbroadcast." This same concept worked with the "mnpolitics" Voter Voices effort and I think it could work in the U.S. presidential election to create a number of more visable "content streams" of voter driven content. During the conference they'll have an active IRC chat space and it looks like a place on Second Life. I wish more conferences used such interactive tools to their fullest ... of course the audience for this conference is made up of folks who get and use these many tools almost everyday. Here is their agenda and below is the draft text from the Local Up! working group that I volunteered to help facilitate: 9:00-9:15 Welcome 9:15-10:00 Keynote: Henry Jenkins on "Convergence Culture" 10:00-10:15 The State of the Union -- Politics and the Internet: John Palfrey, Berkman Center for Internet and Society 10:15-11:15 Panel I: Participatory Culture * moderator: Jesse Walker, Managing Editor, Reason Magazine * Susan Buice and Arin Crumley, Four Eyed Monsters * Kenny Miller, Executive VP and Creative Director, MTV Global Digital Media Team * Elizabeth Osder, Senior Director, Product Development, Yahoo! Facilitators: * Steven Clift, E-Democracy.Org and DoWire.Org * Add your name to help. Go geography! Local communities are where we will close the loop with the Internet and citizen participation. Why? It is at this level where more citizens, not just active political bloggers, will be able to measure, see, and experience the results of their online involvement in their highly interactive, two-way "first life." Many approaches connect special narrow interests or "like minds" nationally or globally, in this session we turn the Internet upside down and will focus on connecting diverse people (political, background, interests, etc.) or "dislike minds" who live near each other and have a common interest in their community. It is proposed that we start with at least four questions discussed at four levels of locality. The questions (please add/edit): * Share your vision. What do you want to see? * What is actually happening today? Who can add to this conversation? * How can we foster connections at this level with technology (web 2.0, standards, etc.)? * Reality check. What requires people to act, to lead, to apply technology "democratic intent" for good to be generated? The four levels of locality to be discussed one by one: * Block level, those neighbors who live closest to you. * Neighborhood and small town level (hundreds to say 10,000) * City-wide, county-wide in rural areas * Metropolitan areas The outcomes from this working group will be: (Add/edit some now) * Vision collection/summary * Wiki list of who is doing what with local communities and participation online * List of top ten democracy online requirements of local government and local media - for future local e-democracy audits (adpating from indicator studies) * * * Here are some local projects that offer inspiration: * Block level: * Neighborhoods: o Neighborhood forums and links. o Neighbourhood Fix-it - Project in development by mySociety in the UK. * Small Towns: o Northfield.Org and Locally Grown Northfield - Small Minnesota Town Blogosphere * City-wide: o Local Issues Forums - Hosted in seven communities by E-Democracy.Org - Examples (Note, semi-closed for upgrades Monday-Tuesday this week) - Minneapolis(700+ members), St. Paul (450+), Brighton and Hove, England And newer meta-sites/tools like: * Outside.in - Geo-friendly blog aggregator * Placeblogger - A directory of blogs about places * Front Porch - A neighborhood communication tool *** Democracies Online Newswire - http://DoWire.Org *** To comment/for links: http://dowire.org/notes/?p=336 To network: http://groups.dowire.org Submit posts: http://dowire.org/submit Member profile for Steven Clift: http://groups.dowire.org/main/contacts/stevenclift ----------------------------------------- Group home for Newswire - Steven Clift's blog posts by e-mail: http://groups.dowire.org/main/groups/newswire Replies go to members of Newswire - Steven Clift's blog posts by e-mail with all posts on this topic here: http://groups.dowire.org/topic/602398 For digest version or to leave Newswire - Steven Clift's blog posts by e-mail, email [email protected] with "digest on" or "unsubscribe" in the *subject*.
