Hello, BetaNYC!

I'd like to invite you to a networking event and panel discussion at
AlleyNYC next Thursday, 10/23
<http://www.eventbrite.com/e/civicmakers-building-a-better-democracy-with-technology-tickets-13405294597>.
We'll be mixing, mingling and discussing how technology is helping
communities revitalize democracy at the local level. We have a great group
of speakers lined up, and will also have plenty of beer, wine and tasty
food on hand.

What is CivicMakers, you may ask? We are a community of creative,
passionate citizens who are building a better democracy everyday, at every
level of society—our technology and governments, our communities and
workplaces. CivicMakers seeks to experiment with new forms of collective
governance and participatory politics to achieve our emerging vision of a
truly inclusive, direct democracy.

We've been gathering in the San Francisco Bay Area since June, and this is
our first event on the East Coast. I hope you can join us!

Best,
Lawrence Grodeska

We live in an age of broken politics, overwhelming civic cynicism, and vast
disparities in wealth and justice. At the same time, grassroots interest in
rebuilding democracy abounds, from the maturing open government movement,
to a proliferation of new civic engagement and empowerment platforms.

Now is the time for a new conversation about what kind of society we wish
to live in, and what solutions will move us most quickly in that direction.

Join New York’s civic tech luminaries for a night of delicious drinks,
tasty snacks, and thought-provoking discussion about revitalizing our
democracy. Speakers will include:

   - Ben Kallos, NYC Councilmember
   - Heidi Sieck, COO, Personal Democracy Media Civic Technology Center;
   Founding COO, Democracy.com
   - Mark Headd, Technical Evangelist, Accela, Inc.; Former CDO,
   Philadelphia
   - Seth Flaxman, Co-founder & ED, Democracy Works / Turbovote

Join us if you love democracy!
