Subject: Have Fun Keeping Lake Hiawatha Storm Drain Junk Free -
Stenciling Party and Minnehaha Clean Up
To: Minneapolis Powderhorn Neighbors Forum

We've had a great exchange on the impact of storm drains flushing way
too much garbage from the streets north and west of Lake Hiawatha:

This map shows how neighborhoods like Bancroft, Northrop, Powderhorn,
Corcoran, and even a bit of Phillips drains into little Lake Hiawatha
in addition to Standish and Ericsson:

Well, the clean up sharing of one resident - over 37 bags of garbage
totaling over 1,000 pounds - has spurred interest in a new stenciling
project to remind people where all the debris ends up from grass and
twigs to that piece of plastic sitting near the gutter.

See below to join the stenciling party on July 26.

Stormwater Presentation - July 7
Please join the SENA Quality of Life Committee on Tues, July 7, 6:30
p.m. to hear a presentation from Darren Lochner, Minnehaha Creek
Watershed District Education Program Manager, about stormwater
management systems - how do they work? where does it go? - and the
integration of the MCWD, MPLS Park Board and City of MPLS. (SENA
office 1830 E 42nd St)

Neighborhood Stormwater Stenciling Project - July 26
In coordination with the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) and
Minneapolis Public Works, we have arranged for a "Neighborhood
Stormwater Stenciling Project" on Sunday, July 26, from 9:00-Noon.
Taking place at the same time as the MCWD's "Minnehaha Creek Clean Up
Event" headquartered at Lake Hiawatha, we'll meet up there at 9:00
a.m., distribute stenciling kits, maps and instructions and fan out
across the neighborhood. We'll return to Lake Hiawatha park by 11:30
a.m. for free BBQ, beer (if you're old enough) and celebration as
provided by MCWD. Please email bobk @ standish-ericsson.org if you are
interested in participating (we must have an accurate number of
stenciling groups in order to obtain the right amount of stenciling
kits.)
