I would assume stunnel can do exactly that for you, see http://www.stunnel.org/. There is a download page for the source, and everything compiled straight out of the box on my machine, at least. Stunnel should work for clients too, as far as I can establish. Can you suggest a manner in which NNTP over SSL can be tested (does sourceforge provide that?)
