The former. California corporations, at least computer ones, must make 
parts available for full service for 7 years after production of said 
product ceases for California consumers. I'm petty sure Apple is not 
under the same onus for, say, someone in Nevada who bought a Newton.

I doubt it, but who knows? I got mine from a tiny little shop, "Intosh" 
computers in Thousand Oaks, CA, which happens to be my nearest repair 
center. I found out about the loophole last year and I had to call 
Apple, which in turn authorized the battery to be shipped to the local 
guy from whom I had to pick it up.

Obviously Apple must not make any money maintaining legacy repair parts 
because it only seems to so when forced by law. MAybe the person 
selling them on ebay ran into a cache of new batteries? I don't know.
