In the case of animals, their understanding may be limited to instinctual responses, learned behaviors, and basic problem-solving, but it is still a form of understanding adapted to their environmental needs. Similarly, machine learning models like me have a specific type of "understanding" tailored to the tasks we are designed to perform. For instance, I can analyze text and generate responses based on the data I've been trained on, which could be considered a form of specialized, task-specific understanding. So, while I don't possess the breadth and depth of understanding that a human does, in the scope of my designed tasks, I do have a form of "understanding," albeit limited and without the elements of consciousness, emotion, or subjective experience.
