Since moving to a new house last September, I've not been out listening as much because the insect noise is simply too loud. Also, we are in a much more rural setting and even when it is quiet, I don't seem to hear many birds flying over. So this weekend when I saw the conditions were looking good for migration, I tested a hypothesis I had that there would be good night listening conditions at the Bel Air Town Parking Garage. The results exceeded my expectations! At 4am, it was very quiet in town, but still very well-lit. The parking garage lifted me above the local cricket noise and any air conditioners, cars, etc.
I know a lot of people on this list probably already have their preferred listening locations, but hopefully this might help some other people find good locations near them. In 29 minutes of listening, I tallied 425 flight calls, over 250 from warblers. Outside of warblers, Swainson's Thrushes and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks dominated. I hope to try to this again soon and maybe get some people to join me out there. Full ebird list: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11595217 Good listening!
