Hi all, I’m listening “live" using a plant pot mic, monitoring for fun mostly, the better the flight, the more I stay tuned. I had hoped to start recording migrations, but only recently discovered that the Macbook Pro with 15” retina display which I bought last year actually has no audio input, a jolting oversight on my part. But I gather there are ways around it, but so far I’ve only received conflicting info regarding what type/model USB sound card to use to get around the issue…it seems that when it comes to third party hardware Apple Support will not recommend or pin point any specific product…those they loosely ‘describe’ turn out from my investigations to be PC compatible only? Id appreciate hearing from anyone with first or secondhand experience/knowldege getting around this type of issue. Thanks.
I only started listening this season just about three weeks back. The best night/morning by far was Sept 23rd-24th. The night sky started clear and starry, but a heavy fog had set in before dawn. The rate of SWTH and GRTH calls, with birds sounding like they landed near my house, began around 5am and kept building to 6:30am, was definitely the most calls I’ve ever heard in my life. It sounded like a small sized peeper chorus in spring, dozens of calls constantly overlapping, it was hard or impossible to know how many individuals were actually involved. But it was pretty impressive. Last night’s NFCs was slow, but there were enough warbler and sparrows type calls to keep things interesting. A fair smatter of SWTH, some GRTH. Still haven’t heard a slam dunk HETH yet this season, although two distant calls last night might well have been that species, and i may have dismissed others before now? I slept through this mornings' decent. However, a distinct highlight for me at least came at 1:50am via three “tzeew” calls from a LAPLAND LONGSPUR, presumably the same individual, which to my ear/experience perfectly matched the LALO Fig.2 on the Evans/O Brien CD. New species for my yard list. Happy NFC listening, Gerard.
