As a matter of expediency, I agree with you, Phil.

But now that I understand Sergey's original question and he asks for
opinions, my opinion is that if a patch is warranted for this, then no, the
scaling factor should not be selectable. k is 1000, not 1024. End of story.
But perhaps in addition to  ( k, M, G ), there should be support for ( Ki,
Mi, Gi ) - the 1024-based variants - also.
