Microsoft's E&D Shakeup: View from the Trenches

As the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, Microsoft announced
an executive shakeup in the Entertainment and Devices Division, home of
Windows Phone, Zune and Xbox.

Longtime executives Robbie Bach and J. Allard are out. Andy Lees, head
of the Mobile Communications Business and Don Mattrick, head of the
Interactive Entertainment Business now report to Steve Ballmer.
David Treadwell, formerly VP of Live Platform Services, is moving into
the Interactive Entertainment group. Bach will remain through a
transition period, retiring in the fall.

A few executives were also shuffled in the Office groups.

What's it all mean? The consumer division is in disarray, at least from
a leadership standpoint. The Windows Phone 7 launch is on the horizon,
and Redmond needs to execute the Win7 phone launch successfully to
have any chance in the smartphone business.

As Google celebrates the 30th anniversary of Pacman with its first
interactive logo, announces a new Google TV platform at its
Google I/O developers' conference last week, and begins to hone in
on business and enterprise customers with initiatives like the
Google App Engine for Business; Microsoft, after 10 years, is still
flailing in the consumer business. Microsoft's three screens
(PC, TV and mobile) and the cloud vision is a being realized by
the competition.

As any job seeker knows, if you want the scoop on what's really
going on at a company--ask the people who work there.

Luckily, Redmond insider Mini-Microsoft made a rare appearance today
and blogged about the E&D fallout:

"Just a quick celebration of this morning's news: Robbie Bach is
retiring from Microsoft," said Mini. "I'm so happy for him. And
for Entertainment and Devices. And Microsoft." Mini continued, "This is a
great opportunity
for E&D to evolve and restructure. And, of course, a great opportunity
to really screw up who to put in charge and such."

Microsofties, former employees and others weighed in. Here's a sample of
what
the "anonymous" commenters on Mini's blog said about today's news:

"Actually it's sad day. I thought Robbie had [it] in him to be the
 next CEO of MS."

"Sad that Robbie is leaving. He is a sane manager in the SLT and one of
the few who can go toe to toe with [Kevin Turner] (seen that first hand).
Good that Don Mattrick is stepping up, he's well respected and gets things
done. Andy Lees? We'll have to see about him. He put a good management team
into Phone but Kin's release: meh (too little too late, Danger); WP7 is
 late but has great promise."

Change is difficult but the missteps at Microsoft required action. Can
the company bring in some talent or promote up and comers from within
who don't fit Microsoft's "middle-aged men in sweaters" reputation
voiced by a pundit on CNBC last week?

A company's culture as dev teams know all too well can be the biggest
hurdle to software and technology innovation that is supported by
management. Express your thoughts on the shakeup at Microsoft here:
