My experience is when I have sent an Email from VM (IP:
192.168.100.5), this identity was sent as configured. When the
recepient tries to do a trace back, he will be not able to do so.
Because the Mail header will have the virtual IP.

But, if you guys are speaking in terms of Network then this can happen
in below ways
1. Router <---> Router
2. Router <---> Host (Either)
3. Host    <---> Host

All the above can be teared-off by discovering the Firmware/Protocol/
Algorithm vulnerabilities. So, once if you are also connected to this
existing Virtual Network..... Then We can trace back the IP.

Above para will give an idea and process.
I can give some practical example if needed.
