Nov 8th 2010 - Bangalore COPS

The city police check the antecedents of ethical hackers before seeking
their service to solve cyber crimes.

The stringent checks are carried out to prevent criminal activities
involving ethical hackers, like the one reported recently in Coimbatore.

A senior police officer in the city said the force preferred hackers
residing in the city. The police request their service whenever a high tech
cyber crime is registered.

“They have been working with us since the beginning of the cyber crime
police station in 2000. They are the most reliable technicians,” deputy
superintendent of police (administration) Mari Setty said.

“The technicians will have to work at any point of time. Sometimes even at
night or midnight we might need their assistance. While hiring, we ensure
that the person is a local and accessible. We check their background before
hiring them,” he added.

The police said they were trained to track cyber crime offenders. “Clearing
the data permanently from hard disks needs more technical knowledge. This is
why we seek the assistance of ethical hackers,” another police officer said
on the condition of anonymity.

The term ethical hacker, however, did not go down well with technicians.
“Hacking is a wrong word; it’s actually cracking,” said software engineer
Santhosh Tuppad. “Like any other knowledge, this too can be misused. But the
offenders will face the brunt one day. In cyber crime, it’s difficult to
escape.”

The Tamil Nadu police was left embarrassed after Joshua Anand Babu of
Coimbatore, an ethical hacker they had employed, blackmailed the daughter of
a Bangalore-based hotelier.
The police sought his service after a man had posted obscene pictures of the
girl on her Facebook page.
