FYI. I included changes for another CR -- a memory leak issue, into this
wad of changes. You can find more about the leak in CR 6826476 --
I've attached the Description/Evaluation. That plus some comments
changes, fix for an alignment issue in Sparc, fix leaks, etc. Quite a bit
of changes from the previous webrev. The new webrev is at:
