It's a bit more subtle, linux does use 1024 BUT they can aggregate up to
4 such buffers in a sge (that's why I remembered 4k, not 8)

I'd say reception has to be biggest legal size, send smallest. Ideally
all implementations should match, but I haven't taken a look at Solaris'
